Judging from the names of your combo boxes (drop down), they do not appear to be numbers. If I have that correctly, summing up the values (a numeric Function) will be quite difficult...

The article (and I) assume(s) you are familiar with queries. If this is not the case then there are some basics you need to learn before you start dabbling with macros and VBA.

You can exclude those items by using the Not In() Function in a Query.

Want version of Access are you using? I had this exact same problem when we upgraded from 2010 to 2013. All we could get from Microsoft was “we are aware of the problem”

I have employed this method and it works like something that works really well. I believe I got the idea from one of Colin's (Isladogs) sample DB's but I cant recall at his moment.
