Re: Books don't alway tell you everything!

That will happen if you use the dbAppendOnly as the second parameter (Recordset Type) when it should be the third (Recordset Option). As the second parameter it is interpreted as dbOpenForwardOnly.

Re: Books don't alway tell you everything!

WHERE wins which race exactly?

When opening a recordset with Option dbAppendOnly the RecordCount is zero. The engine doesn't have to evaluate anything. There is no need to test EOF to be sure it...

Re: Books don't alway tell you everything!

Don't know but it would seem kind of dumb if it returned records.

Re: Books don't alway tell you everything!

Why not use the OpenRecordset's Option parameter dbAppendOnly ?

Re: Mythbusters Poll - Query vs SQL vs Query Def

I would expect the methods of the database to be slightly faster than DoCmd which is a method of the Application. Application methods must be interpreted then passed to the database.

We don't know...

Re: Missing records

No it doesn't. The image in post 3 shows only three unique Tasks which is why you only get three when you group on it.

Re: Rest Button Missing Results

You are testing controls for Null but resetting them to a NullString.

Re: Mythbusters - Make Table vs Append Query

Anything that creates records then deletes them is going to bloat. I have long been an advocate of using a temporary database for which I coined the term "Side End". A good location is in one of the...

Re: Help with multiple IIF statements

That is exactly the kind of problem that is eventually encountered when structuring range limit records with upper and lower values. It is easy to end up with a gap or overlap in the ranges.

Re: Help with multiple IIF statements

 None of IIF(), Switch() or Case() is the right way to handle this problem. The approach to the problem is fundamentally flawed.

What are you going to do when the business rules change...

Re: Speed Comparison Tests - Having vs Where

Well there is a long held illusion gone.:o I adopted it very long ago when I saw a performance improvement in a query I changed.

Goes to show the importance of replicating experimental results in...

Re: Too few paramaters. Expected 2 in OpenRecordset

The easiest way to centrally persist a readily accessible value for the whole session is to store it in a form with a default value expression. The form can be hidden.

Another alternative is a...

Re: Too few paramaters. Expected 2 in OpenRecordset

What I said was that the query could not be run without setting the TempVar. The Eval solution doesn't require any VBA to run the query directly.

Re: Too few paramaters. Expected 2 in OpenRecordset

No, technically it is less temporary than any VBA variable. The name never made any sense to me.

TempVars is a Collection with a scope of the Project and is immune from being reset within the...

Re: RecordSource from 2 tables

The number of columns (fields) and the datatype of the corresponding columns must match.

Union is not editable.

Sounds like you need to change the table structure to get both into one table.

Re: Too few paramaters. Expected 2 in OpenRecordset

:(
When someone with Paul's knowledge and experience suggests something and you can't get it to work then you should suspect your implementation of it rather than the advice.

The Eval() parameter...

Re: RecordSource from 2 tables

A UNION query only uses the field names from the first subquery. The original field names in the subsequent subqueries are ignored.

BTW Best use UNION ALL. This saves time by not checking for...

Re: DESPERATE - Count help needed

I left it out because it would require a Group By to include it and the values would be the same anyway.

It avoids the Group but the problem is still only being able to select after applying...

Re: Mixed Units of Measure

Absolutely nothing wrong with having the units defined like that. Indeed it is preferable to separating into three columns.

My complaint is the choice of the field NAME. Special characters should...

Re: DESPERATE - Count help needed

I really do wish people would stop advising this kind of horrifically inefficient SQL.

That query requires two functions to be run against EVERY record before the Select can be applied. The engine...

Re: Mixed Units of Measure

U/M is a terrible name for a field.

Always avoid including special characters in any object name.

Re: Howto change the event function name

A function without a defined return will return Empty which is the uninitialized form of Variant.

You can test this with IsEmpty().
