Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

When all else fails add another category.

A- an accountant
B- a plumber who is also an accountant
C- a shot of Jack Daniels

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

ok - going back to post 1

Quote:
It's pure logic

If you called someone to come over and fix a broken faucet or a leaky pipe, the person you called would be MORE LIKELY:
A- an accountant
B- a plumber who is also an accountant
Both A and B are accountants.
So whichever one you choose to do the job, you get an accountant so answer A will always be true i.e. more likely

It would still be true whichever one you chose to do your tax returns, mow your lawn or code your database.

EDIT As everyone knows Jack Daniels is also a well known accountant

Right.
I’ve gotten: “a plumber because an accountant makes more money”
more than once.

Maybe I’m telling it wrong?

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

If someone is a plumber AND accountant, they are a subset of all accountants. They are also the exact same set as people who are accountants and plumbers. The order of terms does not logically indicate priority.

A Venn diagram would be useful but you’ll have to imagine it.

One circle includes accountants. Another, separate circle, includes plumbers. Where they overlap (which is necessarily a smaller area than either individual circle) includes those who are both plumbers AND. accountants. This is a subset of either of the two circles.

It is impossible to be a member of a subset w/o being a member of the set (circle), but the reverse is definitely possible. Therefore it is mathematically proven that A is more likely than B.

I think its been deliberate.

Similar to asking the question:

Which taxi are you more likely to have dispatched to you? A Taco or a Taco with cheese?

The answers make no sense in context (if you understand the original query) so neither answer is actually correct. So yes poking fun at it is probably where this thread has gone.

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

The problem with a theoretical logic problem is that in today's world of too many darned specialists, asking for a plumber WILL likely result in you getting a plumber who needs an accountant to handle the exorbitant amounts of money he will charge you.

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

Doc,

Sure the PLUMBER needs the ACCOUNTANT, but you wouldn't be talking to someone who's paid that much if you need to schedule the plumber to come see you. You'd be talking to a receptionist who's paid a pittance (half a pittance after tax) rather that an accountant who's billing dozens of pittances per hour!

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

reminds me of the old Russian joke about a comrade who had saved up enough money to buy a car. So off he went to the showroom and ordered his car. The salesman did all the paperwork, looked up and said 'great, the car should be ready for you on the 25th April 2021'. The comrade looked a bit down and said - hmmm, can you make it the 26th, I've got the plumber coming on the 25th...

CJ, it's still funny - but it was a crib from a Ronald Reagan speech.

Re: which is MORE LIKELY?

I like AccessBlaster’s idea. The original post reminds me of the type of questions we would get asked at school when they were trying to develop of anyalytical skills and broaden our horizons.

Didn’t work so well on some of us...

I would try this on either of my young-adult daughters but I want to avoid the disappointment and dismay I would feel from their blank stares...

That one reminds me of the one where a guy is going through some old boxes in the attic and he finds a repair ticket for some shoes he had forgotten about for 10 years at least. But he figures wtf and the next day he goes to the shoemaker shop. He walks in and puts the ticket down on the counter. The old cobbler looks at the ticket and takes it into the back. He comes back out in 5 minutes.

Guy: Well, do you have the shoes?

Cobbler: They will be ready next Wednesday.
