Can anyone advise how to change the date in a column 2000 lines long from 20080528 to 28052008.

Format > cells > Choose Date and pick the format you want (if it's not there choose change locale to say UK and it will appear.

If you do as you say how then do you remove the seporater line?

Ah - go into custom and change a date one to ddmmyyyy (remove the separators) didn't realise you wanted it in exactly that format.
