Hallo, my name is Jackie (Jacques). I'm greeting you from Knokke-Heist, the most beautiful place on the Belgium Coast.
I have used Filemaker for more than 20 years. In the past I have also used 4D. Recently I changed to Access. Some people do crosswords, I do database...

Welcome, whether you like Jackie or Jacques. (By the way, you can sign a post to tell us which way you like for responses.)

Welcome.
A few months ago, we had someone trying to persuade us to move from Access to Filemaker which they preferred.
Out of interest, what made you move in the other direction?

Filemaker is great and easy to use. But it's rather expensive if you use it on several computers. The data and the form in which it's shown are too connected, which gives larger files and slower calculations. Although that last depends on the computer you use. I have also experienced some issues with updates.

Good to know that Filemaker appears (to you) to be slower. Thanks for that info.

In access data, calculations, forms, reports are more seperated. The data is stored in one place, calculations happen in query's, in forms and reports data is shown. With Filemaker they more or less happen in the same place. As the database grows calculations slows the application down. With a recent PC one won't notice it but when running the application on an older PC I see a difference. On the other hand Filemaker is much easier to set up.

Years ago, Filemaker's selling point was that it was flat file so very simple to use. Am I correct that its now a fully relational database system?

Yes now it is and I still think it's a good product. But the transition wasn't so smooth.
