I have a split Access 2002 database
"backend"db1 = tables only
"frontend"db2 = all the rest.

I need to upgrade to the latest version of Access

Just a quick question

Can I hit "upgrade database" on a version of the "frontend" and use it to access the "backend" WITHOUT upgrading the back end.

That way I can test the functionality of the new "frontend" (I expect a few "obsolete code nightmares") while the users work on the old version.

Probably. Why not try it?

Hint: make a backup of everything

you want see any change. New access can read old access just fine.
you are upgrading the Access mother app, NOT your database app nor BE.

nothing should affect you.

I was just worried that the new "2016frontend" may overwrite something in the old "2002backend" - that would stop old "2002frontends" accessing the old "2002backend"

My plan is thus:-

Make dummy copy of old "backend"
On new machine upgrade a copy of the old "frontend" to Access2016 from Access2002.
Use "2016Frontend" to access DummyBackend
90-99% bugfix "2016frontend"
Link "2016frontend" to "REALBackend"
Add more users to test further (some users being left on "2002Frontend")
When happy migrate all users to "2016Frontend"

I hope that makes sense - if so can you see any probelms

What exactly is your "latest version of Access"?
When was the last time you made design changes to the 2002 database?

What brings about this change now? Is it time for redesign?

I think the answer to
Can I hit "upgrade database" on a version of the "frontend" and use it to access the "backend" WITHOUT upgrading the back end.
is NO.
But there are several posts on forums where people describe their approach/results and issues on moving mdb to accdb. Many suggest moving to 2007 before 2010/13/16, but I don't have personal experience. Things get added and/or deprecated from version to version, so a click a button approach to get 100% result is highly unlikely.

I think this is the sort of thing you will find from experiences by others.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply jdaw - the reason for the upgrade is XP is dying - I am being forced to upgrade - also 32 to 64bit will probably help some other programmes ;) . I was altering a couple of things this morning - just small changes.

Unless you absolutely have to, do not install 64 Bit Access.

Unless you have need of spreadsheets with 12.34 bazzillion rows there isn't any real benefit to the 64 bit version of office, and there are compatibility issues with 32 bit versions.

Hi Minty

The problem I have is that when a PC dies I now cannot reinstall the Office 2002 as the product code seems to be out of date :confused: All I get is lovely messages telling me to upgrade.

I need a modern version of access and my OS and I thought that I might as well go through the pain in one big hit rather than 2

What are your thoughts ?

Sorry you misunderstood my ramblings, I wasn't suggesting NOT upgrading, just don't bother with the 64 bit versions of office, get the 32 bit version of office 2016 or 2017.

Be warned though you can't upgrade directly from 2003 Access to 2016 you would ideally need to go through 2007 or 2010 first.
