Yesterday, Art Neville passed away at age 81. He was a founding member of The Meters and was a member of The Neville Brothers band with three of his brothers. The Neville family has been influential in New Orleans music for several decades, including Art's brother Aaron Neville who had a hit some years ago with "Tell It Like It Is." The next generation of the Neville family has a band called Dumpstaphunk but I don't know much about them.

Art was a keyboard man. I never personally met him, but he played at the Louisiana Jazz and Heritage Festival (a.k.a. Jazz Fest) many times. At that venue, I heard him perform live on stage. His signature instrument was a big Hammond console organ with external speakers. He earned the nickname "Poppa Funk."

Here is a link to some of the music, most of it in the style of "New Orleans Funk" but not all of it.

Earlier this year we lost Dr. John, a very well-known pianist and vocalist; and Dave Bartholemew, a producer, songwriter, and instrumental performer. Dave was a frequent collaborator with Fats Domino.

I already posted something for Dr. John so I won't repeat the references.

A littler sobering when we hear the names of prominent people when we were younger announced that they have passed away due to “old age”...

Especially when you know that they are younger than you when they passed (62 is still going strong).
