Unhappy Access 2003 Crashes when linking to Excel 2003

Until yesterday I had never had this issue.

I've been experimenting with Visual Studio and it suddenly decided to make my XP SP3 machine decide that no MS Office applications were installed.

This resulted in the need for a clean install of Office which has now been done.

Normality is largely restored except that now every time I try to link an Excel file Access crashes with no error message and points me at the MS Update website. I have downloaded all the at least vaguely relevant-seeming updates and installed them but the problem persists. Text and csv files and access tables all link fine.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this would be welcome, as I am at the end of what I can do and am stuck with non-functioning Access!
