Oracle BLOB field links as Short Text

I have a problem when linking to back end Oracle files, that BLOB fields are considered by the ODBC driver to be Short Text fields. This results in such errors as "Microsoft ODBC Drive Manager Function Sequence Error (#0)" when I try to view the table.

Is there a way of specifying the field type or a better ODBC driver? I can't change the backend.
