User groups

Hi Guys

What are user groups in sql server? why do we need to create them? Can we create by ourselves or this needs to be done by helpdesk. (not developers).

Does it relate to database security ? Can anyone please explain?

Thanks

Re: User groups

I can provide some basic information. By defining a user group you can set security for that group to only have particular rights to a database/table (in newer versions of MS-SQL even more control). Of course you would have to particular rights to the database to create user groups and control their security (I do not recall what those rights are).

Re: User groups

aman,

Here's a couple of links:

https://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservert...best-practice/

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql...ql-server-2017

Windows groups are easier for you and/or the DBA.

Very easy database grants:

Grant Read to ReaderGroup;
Grand Read/Write to DeveloperGroup;

View members --> Exec xp_logininfo 'Group','Members'

hth,
Wayne
