Re: Upcoming games

Gaming...I haven’t played any since the mid 90’s when SoF II was the game to play. Have NO idea what’s out there and what is coming up. I can only imagine how much better they have gotten.

Re: Upcoming games

These days, I wait for my grandsons to tell me about the new games. I never know ahead of time if a great new game is coming. Heck, I've gotten behind on playing the games I've bought but not loaded yet.

If you have a steam account, most new games are advertised there.

Right, but I was specifically asking what people are looking forward to.

I'm a console gamer. I've tried going with PC and just couldn't enjoy it.

I currently play on PS4.

Re: Upcoming games

I'm into the Fallout series myself. Really enjoying them, but not going to get 76'. Not into the MMOs.

Have you checked out the PC mods for Fallout 4 coming out? They actually look really good. Fallout Miami looks especially interesting.

Re: Upcoming games

The big one I got into in Fallout 4 is the Sim Settlements mod. It actually removes a lot of the tedium involved in building your settlements by providing a bunch of pre-generated buildings. All you have to do is place plots (based on the type - residential, commercial, security, farming, industrial, etc), and your settlers will build, maintain, and upgrade them themselves over time. In fact, the most recent expansion to this mod (yes, the mod has freaking EXPANSIONS) lets you turn on some REALLY well-done full city builds. You provide extra scrap to speed things along, but the settlers build the entire settlement up on their own, and the finished cities are REALLY cool.

The game I've gotten into most recently is RimWorld. Basically, you start with one or a few survivors who crash-landed onto a remote planet, and build up a settlement while dealing with assorted raiders, mechanite (think Terminator) attacks, and the occasional bug attack ala Starship Troopers. Grow food, build up industry, the whole deal. The goal is to build a spaceship and get your colonists off the planet.

Which I have yet to pull off because the game is freaking BRUTAL. Last weekend, a new attempt had 2 of my starting 3 come down with plague less than a month into the game. Then, while they were sick, a heat wave struck - putting temps at 50C - at the same time a Rhino went mad, attacked the base, and killed the non-sick guy. Then the other two died of the plague. The next game went fine for a few months, until 5 of my now 7 came down with malaria, a cold snap dropped temps to -20C every night, those mechanoids dropped an attack ship on one end of the map and started doing a psychic broadcast that started driving my people insane, and about 8 raiders (think Road Warrior) showed up at the other end of the map, set up a base, and started shelling the town with mortars guarded by machine guns. The only thing it was missing was another Bug infestation at the same time; THOSE show up in the middle of your base if you dig very far into mountains or hills, and they can wreck the stuff IN said base in seconds.

And for the record, I'm playing at one step BELOW normal, since I'm new to the entire genre.

Before that, I was playing a lot of BATTLETECH, since I was a huge fan of the TT game.

As for upcoming, I can't think of any offhand, since Fallout 76 got crossed off my list. It's not going to be an MMO - servers will be 12 people apparently - but it's going to be first person online survival with no option at launch to play on private servers, and there will be NO NPC's except for a few robots. The only humans in the game will be other players, and Bethesda is being ENTIRELY too optimistic in their beliefs that they've cured online griefing.

Re: Upcoming games

Tonnage or dollar games for Battletech?

Only people I ever ran into wanted to lay "So many tons" and didn't care cost. Made vehicles all but prohibitive to play.

Last time I did, I had a bunch of very quick hovercraft with quad machine guns. Swarmed the big mechs. Had a very upset opponent.

After I win with my current game I'm going to be turning Sim Settlements on. Trying out being a friend to the BoS for a change. I'm NOT doing much with settlements yet, so I'll be waiting until after the institute is a crater before I have fun with them.

Re: Upcoming games

1) Where I played the most, we used a tonnage system modified by tech base: IS stuff was counted as 2/3 the tonnage of Clan stuff. Note that this was before there was a standard points system in place; we were playing when 3050 and 3055 were the current sourcebooks.

That said, I was the direct cause of a few rules limiting the total tonnage in vehicles which could be brought onto the table, as well as restrictions on the use of elementals and aerospace fighters, as well as a flat-out ban on LAMs. I also put the fear of GOD into people when it came to light mechs after regularly trashing full assault lances with equal tonnage in 20 and 25 ton mechs. My favorite was an 8/12/- clan 25-tonner with MASC, an ER-PPC, and an ER-Medium. The PPC would annihilate anything that could keep up with it, and it could stay at sniping range all day long on anything that outgunned it. One guy went from bragging that his Dire Wolf Widowmaker was going to thrash my four Flyswatters (that's what I called the 25 ton mech) to trying to figure out just why his assault went down before he took out a single light mech.

Hell, I would even spend 20 tons just to provide a nearly unarmed chopper to deliver elementals into the middle of the fight.

Thinking back there was even a 'Scott and Jordan (my best friend) may *NEVER* play on the same team' rule, since he and I were the only two who ever made specialist mechs, and as a result, we only ever lost to each other. I never could get people to understand that fire support mechs backing up short-range brawlers ended up doing WAY more damage in a fight than the same tonnage of mechs with the same weapons distributed equally between them. (A typical star for me would include a 75 ton with 4 LRM 20, a second heavy (or assault) with a mix of gauss rifles, large lasers, and/or ER-PPCs, a medium or heavy consisting almost ENTIRELY of medium pulse lasers (and MASC), a medium with a mix of medium pulse and Streak-6 plus jump jets, and the Flyswatter from above. Opponents would almost invariably field a mix of mechs that all had both long-range and short-range weapons, with the result that only half their weapons would be effective at any time, whereas once the mechs got to short range, ALL of my weapons were in play (since the fire support mechs would hang back and the scout and brawlers were too dangerous to let behind you).

Nastiest beatdown I ever saw, though, was Jordan bringing nothing but 20-ton, 9/13(18)/Something mechs armed with nothing but ER Smalls against a pair of homemade 100-ton mechs. It was like a swarm of piranha tearing apart a pair of rhinos.

2) I'd honestly recommend starting a new game with Sim Settlements. It ends up changing that part of gameplay that much.

Re: Upcoming games

Oh, and for what it's worth, Jordan won a bloodname at Origins, I think it was either 1993 or 1994. For the final round, he suckered his opponent into taking a Dire Wolf. Then Jordan picked a Summoner (heavy mech with jump jets) and chose 'Heavy Jungle' as the map. He said the entire crowd winced when he named the map. You can guess how it played out.

I just wish I'd been able to go to Origins when they were still doing that.

Re: Upcoming games

Just to say I read the last 3 posts twice and haven't got a clue what any of it means...
Reading all of this somehow makes me feel very old.
But then again, the last games I played were probably Myst & Riven.
Over and out.

Re: Upcoming games

For brawling, 10 10 ton vehicles with a speed of 27. They go from "Out of range" to right in front of you where their MGs just gut your mech.

Only game I ever did that in ended with 2 100 ton mechs burning and no casualties on my group. That was a looong time ago, but it lead to a general ban on "hovercraft" as overpowered.

What do you expect taking lumbering mechs into a swamp???

You should be feeling very young.

BattleTech was a tabletop game that came out about 30 years go, long before these new fangled computer games!

I was playing with the original rules. Waaay long ago...

Re: Upcoming games

Yep, I was introduced to it around 1987 or 1988, and by then, they had already put out BattleTech, CityTech, and AeroTech.

Thanks to Harmony Gold, there has been a LOT of drama over those 30 years.
