Re: Autopopulate empty fields with values from another field.

You have two problems.
1. fixing existing data
2. keeping it from happening again

The update query solves problem 1 but problem 2 should be solved by modifying your append query to include the...

Re: File location

Thanks for the link Gasman. That tool has saved my bacon more than once. Using the old linked tables manager was a serious PITA when you had multiple BEs. It was way too easy to skip a table and...

Re: bang versus dot

You are correct, not all parts of Access are on the same page regarding the use of bang vs dot. In the early days, there was a much more rigid separation. That has blurred over the years but not...

Re: Sales & Purchase Order Database

The advantage when your suppliers are also customers is that you have one point of change. Typically everyone is considered a customer and suppliers are tagged with a SupplierFlg. The only purpose...

Re: Retrieve auto-generated number to linked table

@Garbensor,
It is most helpful to us if when we ask specific questions, you try to answer the questions. We now have a better idea of what you are trying to do but why you are doing this in Excel...

Re: View in Windows vs Tabs

It is not possible to switch between tab and window view on the fly. You have to change the setting and then close and open the database.

If MS had made the switch dynamic, I might use tab view...

Re: Closing a Form after Validation

VBA is actually much easier than macros. Macro logic is bizarre to anyone who knows even the rudiments of VBA.

Re: Unable to view Objects

Try using the custom view so you can see what is in the custom groups. This is a technique that makes it more difficult for nosy people to get to tables in the BE but it is not foolproof. You...

Re: Closing a Form after Validation

This can be handled by using a left join between the project and location tables.
Refer to my previous comments regarding the user having the ultimate power because he has the power off button. If...

Re: Manual input to combo box.

I'm with Dave on this one. Parts are not something that simply materialize out of thin air so I would never use the NotInList event to add a new one. In fact, I almost never allow entries to combos...

Re: Retrieve auto-generated number to linked table

Being an intern is a dirty job but somebody has to do it :)

As everyone is trying to explain, it is just wrong to store the same data in multiple places. If the application is not currently doing...

Re: Embedding fonts in Access DB

Just FYI, make sure that the fonts are not proprietary and that you don't need to pay for copies for each PC.

Re: Closing a Form after Validation

There are too many comments for me to review all of them fully to determine where you are but here's what's wrong with the basics. If you fix these things, you should be able to move forward.

1....

Re: Table Design & Relationships

Converting the old data is not a problem once you define the schema.

Many of the COLUMNS in the ProductData table will become ROWS in the components table. I think one of my earlier suggestions...

Re: Fill down and auto tab to next field issues

I can't see the attachment yet since it hasn't been approved so I'll start with, do you really have a period in a field name or is that a typo?

Re: Access to App (Android or Apple)

The article doesn't mention Citrix which is my preferred method. The best option is for the client to host Citrix on their server. That allows both local LAN users and remote Citrix users to access...

@Micron,
To be perfectly honest, I completely missed your suggestion or I would have referenced it. Our opinion on the importance of checking references differs though. I check them first and...

Re: You can't exit Microsoft Access now.

Any time ONE user has an odd issue that other users don't have, I start with references. If you distribute an .accdb, this is pretty easy. If you don't distribute an .accdb, you might want to...

Re: Combo Box works for New Records but not for Record Updates

I'm with plog on this. Our comments are not differences of opinion. They go to the underlying soundness or more correctly, the lack there of, for your initial schema.

Start by removing...

Re: Looking for some advice about structure and importing data

This is an extreme view of normalization. In the real world, many pieces of data are optional. For example, even after all these years, many people still don't know the +4 for their zip code. to...

Re: Looking for some advice about structure and importing data

I disagree with plog regarding the 1-data field tables. If you use combos and you want to restrict the values to what has already been defined, then the tables make sense. You could use value lists...

Re: Looking for some advice about structure and importing data

After you have built all the lookup tables as Doc described, you need to use those tables as part of your import process. Create a query that joins the linked spreadsheet to each of the lookup...

Re: Default value of unbound text box

I would advise against ever opening ANY object in design view in "production". This prevents you from distributing an .accde/.mde or using the Runtime engine.

Keep the value in a table if you...

Re: Combo Box Value

Although June gave you the syntax you asked for, I would be cautious of referencing the text value in code since someone could have changed that and if that happens, your code will not work correctly...
