Please join us for our Monthly Chapter Presentation, December 5, 2024 , at 6:30PM Pacific (UTC -8)

Crystal Long and Geoffrey L. Griffith will lead us through the steps to create and deploy Access add-ins and Com add-ins to enhance your Access relational database applications.

Access is a great tool right out of the box and many of us never go much beyond that basic tool kit. Yet, there are times when we say to ourselves, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to make this task easier?” That’s where add-ins come in. Crystal and Geoff will show you how to make that happen with the right Add-in.

An add-in is software you can install once that can run any time you’re using Access or the application(s) for which it’s designed. Two types of add-ins will be demonstrated:
  • Access add-ins
  • COM add-ins
Crystal will show how to make an Access add-in that will be available for you to use anytime you’re in Access. She has a web page about creating and installing Microsoft Access Add-ins, and how to fix some of the errors that you might encounter here:

Geoff will be covering “Creating COM Add-Ins Using VSTO.” For this presentation, he will demonstrate a VSTO Add-In for Word that he created from Crystal’s Word Document Property Editor tool, which she presented to this group in December 2023. He will also do a walkthrough showing how to create a new Add-in project in Visual Studio using the VSTO templates in Visual Studio 2022, and will show how he made Crystal’s tool work as an Add-in. And finally, he will discuss the pros and cons of creating and working with VSTO COM Add-Ins in the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

About Crystal Long and Geoff Griffith, our presenters.

Crystal has been using, teaching, and developing with Access and Office a long time. She connects 1-on-1 to guide developers as they’re building applications. On her website, MsAccessGurus.com, you can find free code, tools, videos, and articles. On her YouTube channel, LearnAccessByCrystal, you’ll find lots of Access videos and some about other Office topics. On forums, she posts as ‘strive4peace’

Geoffrey L. Griffith is an avid user of Microsoft Access and has been working with the product for nearly 30 years now. Geoff began using Access in the Access 2.0 version when he took an “Intro to Computer Applications” class in high school. While attending college, Geoff worked for GBS, Inc., a small software company was developing insurance software applications using Access databases, among other development tools. Upon graduating from the University of Colorado’s Engineering School with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 2004, Geoff was hired by Microsoft to work on the Access team at the beginning of the Office 2007 development cycle. Later, Geoff went on to found “Imagine Thought,” a small IT Consulting firm, where he is still developing and supporting custom software solutions, many of which utilize the incredible power that Microsoft Access provides!
