Hey everyone,

I am Emmanuel Katto from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) hope you’re all doing well! I have a question about working with Microsoft Access files.

I’m trying to run an ACCDE database in an ACCDR (Access Runtime Application) environment. I wanted to know if it’s simply a matter of changing the file extension from .accde to .accdr, or is there a specific tool or method that’s required for conversion?

Additionally, I’m curious about why some people choose to convert an ACCDE to an ACCDR. Is there any added protection or functionality with the ACCDR format compared to ACCDE?

I’d really appreciate any insights or suggestions from those who’ve worked with these formats before.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards
Emmanuel Katto

and .accde database Need full installation of Ms Access on the system in order to run the db.
Runtime version (.accdr) only need to install Runtime version of access.

Please respond to your contributor Mr.Katto of Dubai.

Access runtime with run a .accdb, .accde or .accdr. The .accdr is used by developers to test their app in a runtime environment if it is anticipated it might be used by a user who only has runtime installed.

The .accdr can be used as a very low level security feature to prevent users with a full version from seeing the navigation window and having a limited ribbon/menu. Low level because a user with a full version of access can simply change .accdr to .accdb or .accde.

The runtime version of access has a limited ribbon/menu, cannot display the navigation window and more significantly, disables the standard right click menus. So by inference they will be unable to edit any object. However this does mean if your app relies on users being able to use right click menus - for example to filter or sort a form or datasheet - they won't be able to, so you will need to write your own shortcut menus (which will work in the runtime environment)

In a typical development environment, I would usually always deploy .accdr's. Note - error handling is a must when using the runtime, as unhandled errors crash the app un-gracefully.
