I have a macro created on execl 2007 and have moved the workbook to another laptop running excel 2024

If I use the F8 key to step through the code it takes me to the desk top screen and locks the laptop.

How do I make the F8 key step through the code or is there a different button to use?

thanks

I would have though that was to do with the laptop?
What make and model is it?

FYI, the search string for this problem is "F1-F12 keys not working" which gets me to a pot-load of apparently relevant articles.

I have result. Seems that if I press and hold down the fn key, F8 to tab line by line through the code works .
Can this be automated?

One of the articles I found for that search discusses "function lock" (FN ESC) as a way to release ALL of the keys to be captured by Access rather than be intercepted by Windows. Or maybe I said that backwards as to which one does the capturing and which one does the intercepting. But I think you get the idea.

I doubt it. I use an external keyboard at home and standard f5 f8 works. With my laptop here in Mexico I have to use the fn key. That is standard for most laptops?

It's a confusion between function keys and f8, you're not really hitting f8

As you've learned, laptops require the use of a specific key, often labelled "Fcn" or "Fn" or some similar abbreviation, in conjunction with the F keys (F1 through F12) to invoke the action of the F keys on a regular keyboard. F8 by itself does something quite different.

I am not sure what you mean by "automating" something, though. Are you talking about automating the key combination, or are you talking about automating the line-by-line code step through?

I suppose that some laptop manufacturers could allow you to remap keys on their keyboards. Or you could try something like this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/learning-center/how-to-remap-your-keyboard

There is the equivalent of CAPS LOCK called Function Lock that you can look up, involving the FN key and (usually) the ESC key. One way, the FN keys are mapped for common actions like mail or browser commands. The other way, programs like Excel and Access can use the F1-F12 keys as the programs intended.

That is one of the reasons I hate laptops and never use them. I mean I use them it's all I use actually, but always with a real keyboard and a monitor (s). My current laptop is so stupid it labels certain things for function but then it really wants you to hold down the shift key it makes no sense.
Too many overloaded keys for things nobody needs
