I have a report that gives me how many records were in a period that gives me a count by state and a field that gives me a total of all but I need one that tells me OF those 24, how many were diesel and how many were gasoline

make sense??

Not sure how your Report is set up but, if you are showing all 24 records and the counts are in the report footer ,You could use the count if to count the Petrol and Diesel
Two new text boxes labeled Diesel & Gasoline
Control Source =Count(IIf([nameofField]="Gasoline",0))
Control Source =Count(IIf([nameofField]="Diesel",0))
Report Footer
