I'm not your usual professional or non-professional programmer. I'm self-taught going back the the late 70's when I first used a 'desktop' model that had no hard disk, minimal RAM (32 bites, I think), and must have been at least 3 feet high. That or the next one we purchase saved 'programs' on tape (we used audio tape for quite a while --very slim budget). I taught myself Basic and played around with programming -- producing a couple of mini programs for children, including one that taught typing and was a hit with our 6th grade, and another that taught the letters of the keyboard to 4 and 5 year olds. Programming under those conditions really taught you to keep things short and simple. Not a bad idea, actually.
I'm now working on a database to organize the contents of our archives -- files and photographs of the history of my community, going back the the late 40's. I started it in the 80's using R-Base, which I found relatively easy to use with good advice available by telephone. Had to convert to Access which the rest of the community adopted Microsoft Office in the mid 90's. It isn't as easy as R-Base, but it works. I've just discovered this place and hope I can call on the rest of you for help from time to time.
I wonder if I'm the oldest member here -- 87, a teacher for many years, enjoying old age but not yet retired.
