Hello,
We are working in an office environment where we do not have a server. Two of us are responsible for updating program registrations. We would like to store the DB on an external HD that we will plug in to our computers to update. My colleague emailed me the db, and I had no problem saving it to y computer. But, when I try to save it on the Ext HD, it says that I do not have permission. I can save it as read-only but that does not help us. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I run some Access apps with the back end on an external USB hard drive without any issues.

Sounds like this is not an Microsoft Access issue but a Windows folder permissions issue.

What version of Windows are you running?

What type of external hard drive?
What is the file system used on the external hard drive?

Are you in the same office?

If in separate locations and both have internet access you might find a solution here

Running an Access database over the internet

Thank you!

We are runniing Windows 7 64bit

It is a 320gb Seagate Free Agent Go

I am not sure about the file system used....how might I find that out?

We are in the same office.

Our website was created using drupal with CivcRM? Could it live there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are in the same office and both have an internet connection, does this mean you have a network? If yes, is it wired or wireless?

That is part of the problem. We do not have a network. Some machines are Windows 7 and some are XP. If we had a server, I would just save it there and work off of that. There is talk around the office of getting one but who knows when that might happen. We have a wireless router...are you thinking that I should save it in my shared docs and then my collegue could access it that way? It might work

Access does NOT normally play well over a wireless network.

I would go with the external hard drive before I would ever try using a wireless network to share an Access database.

On the external Hard drive, from the machine that created the folder to place the Access database, make sure that you set the folder permissions for everyone to full. You might have to add the user/group everyone. Once this is done, copy the Access database to this folder. Let me know if that works.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

I created a folder on the ext HD and then went in to the folder properties and unticked the Read-only box and went to the Users tab and set permissions for everything.

I really appreciate the help! We need this DB to be as clean as possible to meet the requirements of one of our major funders. Your help has been invaluable.
