What do I need to do to have a field in my table to except numbers & text?

I'm assuming you mean ACCEPT and not EXCEPT. You would need the field to be TEXT (or perhaps memo if it is going to be longer than 255 characters, but if not then TEXT is the way to go).

You might need to change the "FIELD LENGTH" property to the length (number of characters the field will accept - 255 is the maximum available to a text field)
