Access 2007 runtime opens and closes immediately

I am having a problem running Access 2007 runtime on a workstation. I have set up the 2007 database (.accdb) on our server and am able to connect to it and open it from the pc that has Access 2007 full version installed and it works fine.

I also installed Access 2007 runtime on another PC and was able to open the database using the runtime version just fine.

However, on this other PC, I installed the runtime version, and when I use the command line (msaccess.exe /runtime \\server\directory\database.accdb) to open the database in runtime mode, Access opens for a split second and then closes immediately.

When I just run msaccess.exe, it opens the runtime version and says that I have not specified a database, as expected. So, I am wondering why it is not opening the database when i DO specifiy the database.

If i specify an incorrect directory for the database, it opens the runtime version and a dialog appears telling me that a database was not found, and upon clicking OK, the program closes.

I can say, that when I run it off the computer that works through the runtime version, I get a security warning telling me that there are potentially unsafe elements in the database, but i just have to click OPEN and it still opens it fine.

Perhaps the non-working PC is denying it access due to these security issues?

I can't seem to figure this out, and any help is appreciated.

it may be the security issues

the runtime environment doesnt have any error handling etc

so perhaps the security issues are counted as errors, so it just crashes

is there a runtime switch to bypass the security checks? or something similar

security

I made sure that the database was in a folder that I designated as a trusted location, so that really shouldn't be the problem.

Also, it works from the runtime version on another PC, so it doesn't make sense why the runtime version would allow the database to run on one PC and not the other...

I tried copying the database to a folder that was certainly not trusted, and it does the same thing. However on another PC, when i use the runtime version to access a database that is not in a trusted location, it opens and gives a warning and then doesn't load the DB but leaves Access runtime open...

Additionally, I tried using a copy of the sample Northwind Database. I got the same result when trying to open this database with the runtime version...meaning it has nothing to do with my particular database, but it is a setting with Runtime or some Windows setting that I am unaware of...

So it seems like it is not a security issue, but that there is an issue with the Runtime version itself...I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling completely, with reboots. I also tried uninstalling the rest of MS Office just to be sure, and reinstall Access runtime and still doesn't work.

Any other suggestions?

still not working

I've tried anything and everything I have though of to try. Reinstalling, restarting, uninstalling related programs, I just can't get it to work. Has anyone heard of a problem like this?

if it is an installation issue, then reinstalling may not fix it, since access will check the registry and think its properly installed

look on ms knowledgebase for installation command line options, as you might need an option to FORCE reinstallation of everything

I even tried...

First off, thank you for the suggestions Gemma...What i mean by "reinstalling" was that I uninstalled and reinstalled it. Does this not get rid of everything that would affect whether it is working or not?

I tried installing a 90 day trial of Access 2007 on the computer that was having trouble with the runtime version, and it is able to open the database just fine when using the normal program.

However, still when I add the /runtime parameter and directory of the database to the command, it still does the same thing. Access opens up for an instant and then closes immediately, with nothing showing in the access window for the instant that it is open.

At this point, I am completely stumped, I don't know how it could possibly fail with the full (trial) version installed. It's almost as if there is just something wrong with the PC's configuration and it has nothing to do with Access...but I really have no idea.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Paul

Nothing worked except...

After reinstalling all Office products on the computer multiple times, I resorted to Microsoft's guide to uninstalling Office 2007 completely.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

This involved deleting some hidden files and registry keys that are not removed when uninstalled via Control Panel. Finally, after doing this, I reinstalled Access Runtime 2007, and it worked as planned.

so it was the uninstall then.

i've seen that before with earlier versions, using the repair option. it doesnt do what it should because the registry tells the installer things are ok

so there are some installation command lines switches that force the installer to ignore the registry - i suspect you could have done something similar with your A2007

Just a suggestion. If registry entries are not being removed correctly, download and install Revo Uninstaller. This program first uses the native uninstaller, then proceeds to check both the registry and the "C" drive for related files. I have used this in similar situations on other software, and it works. I always use advanced mode, and simply select everything it finds, but because Office is installed in the same directory as runtime, you should only delete what entries are specific to runtime. An earlier post had some links to help with this.
