We see a lot of bullshit perpetrated by the ignorant about how the costs of carbon reduction will destroy our economy.
Europe introduced carbon reduction schemes several years ago. Despite some of the stategies not being optimal, their economies have not suffered. It has also significantly lowered their carbon emissions.
Placing taxes on cabon don't result in money disappearing. It just pushes the decision makers in the direction of alternative technologies and promotes investment in those sectors.
This developement can and has been seen to boost the economies of those coountires that take it seriously. It ultimately lowers costs because it promotes efficient use of energy. If we continue to underprice the real cost of the damage being done to our environment then decision makers won't change and resources will continue to be wasted.
We saw the same outcry from the refrigeration industry when flurocarbons were banned in the 1980s. The cost of developing new technologies was going to ruin us. Instead they quickly developed less damaging refrigerants that were more efficient.
Moreover the investment in the new technology actually lowered production costs.
