There were 12pence to a shilling, so 20p would be 1 shilling and 8pence. I am using p here for pence as I do not want to type it out all the time? That is likely where the confusion lies, sorry.

Hey,50 years on, I can still recite it

Even more than 50 years on I can still remember memory aids like SOHCAHTOA, ROGBIV, BIDMAS or BODMAS and even .... when you cross the road, you change the sign. How useful any of those are to me any more is another matter
