I have windows 11 and office 2024 and set things up to use outlook classic.
I have been to a web site and clicked the companies email address on the contact us page. A box is displayed with a number of options and one option is Outlook New.
There is an option to click Browse apps in Microsoft Store, this has loads of options, most it seems are nothing to do with email. One of the options is Outlook for Windows installed. All I want, is to use Outlook Classic, how do I configure so that Outlook Classic is opened when I click an email address shown on a website?

thank you in advance

Make it your default email program?

A problem I have that matches @smiler44 symptoms is that if you have the LTSC version of Access, for some reason Windows doesn't see that as a mail handler because (I think) of the "click to run" way that Office is set up these days. This might also be related to the fact that MS is pushing "New Outlook" very hard even though for many of us it is an inferior product because of its lack of COM support. (Not all people will agree with that statement, however.)

For me, the problem shows up most often when I am trying to send e-mail to a business and click on a "mail this person" type of link. I get a choice of GMail or (in my case) Yahoo Mail even though I have Classic Outlook on the machine. I've searched for a way to fix that but so far I must not have asked the right question, or MS is really holding the line on pushing New Outlook.

I believe I have that myself, as I bought a lifetime licence for 2019.
Anyone care to supply a site when I can test myself?

Seriously :-(
They want the O/P to run a Powershell script?
What is wrong with just giving instructions to amend manually.

This is a FWIW post. A couple of days ago I had an issue with the product key, by hook or by crook I ended up getting what I consider to be blood out of a stone, telephone support from Microsoft. Blew my mind I did not think that was possible. Goodness knows if I could find the web page again and get phone support again.
Apparently product key problems are common the lady was saying.

Doc, what do you have for the page I posted in #6 ?

I reset the default mail selections. Thanks for the hint, Gasman. However, when I tested it, it doesn't work because it doesn't launch Outlook. It says it has Outlook as the default, but ... no go. Nothing launches.

So you have the mailto: protocol set as mine is?
Can you please send me a link (by PM ir you prefer) for a mailto: that does not work, and I will just try at my end.

I don't think it is the default apps settings so much as it is the way that Outlook is installed with that click-to-run setup. I'll work on that a little later. BTW, if it do a right-click on the uncooperative mail link, click the Copy Link from that pop-up menu, and then manually launch Outlook and paste the link, that works.

So if you type in
Code:
mailto: link
in a browser, Outlook does not open an email message?

I believe I also have Click To run from this pic below. Though I am using 2019, so not sure why it mentions 365?

Actually, I got the "MailTo:xxx" to eventually launch Outlook but I had to browse for it by finding Programs (X86)>>Microsoft Office>>Office 16 and then diddle around until I found Outlook.EXE in one of those buried folders.

When I go into Settings >> Apps >> Default Apps and try to set Outlook as it is installed on my machine, I do not get the option to use the locally installed Outlook. The list of options gives me Firefox, Edge, GMail, something else that I don't remember at the moment, and "Browse apps in the Microsoft Store" - but it doesn't let me "Browse apps on your machine" (or however they would say it.) So I know Outlook.Exe is there on my machine - but I can't get to it from the default apps options.

I can only find Mailto: in these locations in the registry.
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\IME\15.0\IMEJP\MSIME\AutoAlphaStr
Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3865302989-2123511006-1608563672-1002\Software\Microsoft\IME\15.0\IMEJP\MSIME\AutoAlphaStr

And that is
Code:
1,http:
1,file:
1,ftp:
1,mailto:
1,news:
"1,//www."
1,www.
2,windows
