Joke (one for the Brits) (1 Viewer)

This started as a little joke and kinda went off the beaten track,
Humor is not universal (maybe slapstick is the exception)
It was not a dig at the Yanks and the reason why I said the US might not get it, is due to some of the sweets (candies) having different names
not to imply a lack of humor
it probably could have been rewritten changing smarties to M&M and their must be some kind of mentol cough sweet out their ??
who knows

Humor is alos subjective and some jokes/ comedians are funy and some aren't
i find Billy Connelly - humorous , but cannot stand Jethro,
Jim Carey - in the mask wanted to burn the TV , other stuff he's in great

Guys we need to lighten up

as I have observed before - it only turns into a 'battleground' when certain Americans decide to logon and post daft comments.
when those Americans do not login for a week we have calm and sensible dialogue.

Good job Col - Your I antagonism towards Americans has helped to run yet another gregarious poster from our presence. Hope all of your snide comments were worth it -;)

I'm sorry Col but I think it was this post that changed the tone of the thread

It all went down hill after that.

Brian
That's odd, I thought it went down hill with this

What's with the burning effigy?

Typical Yank - blame someone else.

I recall some of your posts have not necessarily been squeaky clean. So who do you think I was referring to when I said this?

Failing to see the irony of your own remarks?

I'm not sure, you seem to like to tip toe around the issue - ;)

Take a look at Post31 and put it all in context, if you can, and you will see that Dan's post was a continuation of Len's theme regarding what Brits and non Brits can understand, only you could turn it into a squabble.

And only you could ignore the obvious, the comparison of an event that occured in the dark ages with ones that took place within your lifetime

You were the only one to try and draw the comparison between what is now a kids festival and an evil, merely so that once again you could have a go at the Americans. Like Barry I give up. You cannot argue with people with closed or one track minds, who take everything out of context , never stick to the point and are carrying a chip on each shoulder.

No worries, you'll get an even bigger welcome there, oh by the way Barry left because the Americans don't share our humour, seems like they might not be the only ones

Thats true, but Rich and I persevere to teach our American colleagues that there is more to history than the USA - and what little they do know outside the USA is often skewed, so we merely try to set them on the correct path. Otherwise they'll think everything they're taught is correct.

Its a thankless task, but we do try.

Bonfire night (which seems to be a bit of an issue here in the discussion)
was a celebration that the catholic uprising was thwarted way back

it is now just a celebration (with a couple of political twists)
the burning of guys' (it used to be the pope) can now be any polictial figure or high profile person for being a bit of a plonker , this only happens in the south east on the coast Rye, Brighton and Hastings to name the larger events its more a satire event than anything .

to moan about this saying that it is remembering the torture of Guy F. - then you open a real nightmare as we can then jump on the band wagon and go for Christmas

Christmas a celebration of the birth of JC is acutal on the wrong day the reasoning for puttin on the 25/12 was to hide a pagan festival which was quite brutal in orgin (infact quite a few pagan relgions hold this date a sacared ) - however early christian leaders decided to mark JC birthday to rub out these pagan holidays - so should we stop the christmas festival ??? no in these dark months of the year anything to liven it up .

State side Thanksgiving - could also be looked at the europeans coming over bring the plague, smallpox etc to the local population - no you look at the modern tradition a celebration to be shared with family - a family gathering - thankful to be alive

lets look at easter - nail some poor sucker to a cross and celbrate it - again its an odd view I have taken , if you take some of the God squad people they do not celebrate some of these holidays on these grounds - Jehovah Witness (nutters the lots of them , but nice nutters- always polite)

I used to live in Hastings in the 1980's;)

Edit: Or perhaps you'd rather fire up an aquarian - :p :p :p

Well the pilgrims did sail from Plymouth so maybe Rich has an inbred link with the US style of humour.
