Length Efficiency Calculator

Sorry, I could not resist, but this may be a benefit for people working in the quantum realm :)
You have to make everything fool proof. Users still manage to find imaginative ways to use office you never even knew about, though.

Think you have to clearly define the overall objective.

Is it to reduce waste or reduce stock?

Is it to be considered on an order by order basis or by looking at longer term usage to determine common sizes and multiples thereof?

Sadly we have a large team of people who use zero common sense, have no care on the amount they waste, and never, ever, think outside of the box.

I'm pretty sure you will find at least one person who doesn't like waste, in that team a person who would relish the chance to sort out the problem.

You need to empower that person to do what they would naturally do if they had the authority and willingness to do it .. .

I suspect it's politically, not an easy thing to arrange however!

Hi Gasman,

No, the fault here is not the supplier. It is our workers. The cable was all received in 2m lengths. But they always just grab a new length when doing a job, rather than find the most efficient lengths. You have no idea how frustrating this is, so I am trying to find a solution to help our stores team to take the cable away from the assembly team, and only give them the most efficient lengths.

But it also comes back to a cost evaluation. Is the cable expensive enough to need the investment and training in a system that might not save you anything really?

Hi Dave,

In the case the cable is around £10.46/m. So with 250m of off cuts and waste, it is definitely worth the investment into a proper system to manage them.
