Marking threads read

All threads are marked read if you leave the site open and idle for just a few minutes or if you close it and reopen it. Some years ago when I first started posting here, threads didn't get marked as read unless you actually read them or clicked to mark all threads as read. Is it possible to go back to that behavior? I like to pop in for a few minutes here and there during the day but I completely loose track of what I've seen and not seen because the site marks everything read.

I noticed the same thing and I also like to pop in and out and answer a few quick questions when time permits but that is almost impossible with the amount of time each page takes to load all the advertisements.
