Metric Madness

At the top of the hill the sign may say 10% so

The sign at the bottom of the hill for people about to go up the hill it should say -10% then

or vice versa of course

Len,
Almost!

In the UK there are signs for steep hills are a red warning triangle with a black triangle inside that slopes down to the right, indicating steep hill downwards and the opposite indicating a steep hill upwards (a triangle sloping up from the right). Of course, you are likely to know what you are facing from the road itself.

So do we have both at a hill. Triangles and % signs.?. Which is legal ?.

:o Apologies to all those in whom I have planted a false idea. The original explanation given is correct:

Apology graciously accepted.

I knew if I kept guessing, I'd get something right, sooner or later. :D

That just about sums up the attitude of most motorists here when confronted by said road signs ;) :D

I always preferred the 'Cajun' method.

If I've got to look up, it's a hill.

If I've got to look down, it's a bayou.

If I can look straight ahead, I'm not in Louisiana, because we HAVE no straight-ahead roads.

From the highway code site it appears that both % and 1 in x nomlecatures are acceptable.

I think this is backward compatability and all new signs will be in percentage with some old sinage in obscure places still giving the 1 in 10 or whatever.

It is certainly a very longh time since I saw a 1 in x sign but I wouldn't be surprised to find one in remote rural North of Scotland for instance, if I were ever to venture up that way again. They still have single track roads with passing places up there!

They still have them down here too, it's a battle of wits as to who ends up in the space though:eek: ;)

Rich,
If I remeber my bible correctly, the Land of Nod is located to the east of Eden and is where Cain went to lie low after doing the dirty deed on Able.

I thought it would have developed more since then :D Is it a nice place now?

Am I unique? When I get to a hill, be it up or down from where I am, I can usually determine its steepness by looking at it and drawing my own conclusion. If we get any more bloody road signs in this country there'll be nowhere left to stick them except up Blair and Brown's exhaust pipes.
