It seems I have, or have always had for that matter, a competitor in the arena...

The reason is because your post was, in the opinion of some members, demeaning and insulting to a new member. You essentially underestimated that person's abilities without knowing their level of expertise. That is why you get in trouble. That kind of assumption does no one any good.

I promised I wouldn't ban you for the Watercooler posts. However, insulting a new member in a technical forum - even by implication - is a no-no. You are officially now on shaky grounds.

@conception_native_0123

And.... another one.

Adam, this is why you get in trouble. Clean up your act or be prepared for a vacation.

He's not the only one, and a bit ironic that's the thread in question ...

Oh - But BTW, I'm not arguing with you at all on this, it's just the thought struck me

@Isaac - did I miss ANOTHER thread involving his attitude to new members or were you considering some other factor?

point taken. I will do better. good point. the proof of a wise man's words is in the above quote. but on my side, I think underestimating a person's abilities in this day in age is a heck of a lot better than over-estimating. I mean, we've got so many people now all across the world engaging in deep fake interviews just to get tech jobs when they have no tech skill. have you heard of this going on?

The question is not simply under-estimating OR over-estimating, but estimating at all. Either one is judging a book by its cover.

ok then. another point taken. but then again, in REAL life, sometimes there just isn't time to try and understand everything. especially if you're in the corporate space. you should know about this very well, since you're all about the corporate world. it's incredibly fast paced. they've got NYC to think about, ya know? =(

When I was working with the Navy and a problem came my way, I was on that problem until it was solved. I didn't judge anybody unless they did something in violation of security regulations. Otherwise, I made no estimation of the person. I made an analysis of the problem. Because it does not matter whether the person was a dolt or a genius. Mistakes happen. And that life seemed pretty damned real to me.

As to what other people do, I am not responsible for other people's foibles. Attempting to pigeon-hole callers is usually bad. People aren't pigeons (unless they are at the poker table with me.)

I've had my ass chewed many times because of doing that. I've had many people tell me "why are you wasting time on this when you could be doing more important things"? geez. it's almost like "why the hell am I working at all?"

"Unassuming". I like that word, and I like the idea of being what it describes, and try to.

Speaking of the comment on poker and crowds and popularity, is Pickle Ball swept your area by storm? It kind of has here, a few years ago - the suburban parks and recreation authorities started going around to any public tennis court, and re-tooling 1/2 of the court space as Pickle Ball space. (Now who would do that?!)
It's crazy ... I don't get it. The d**mn ball just falls flat unless you whack it super hard, looks to me. But it has a big following, people can't seem to get enough of it.

Given my knee and ankle issues, I don't visit tennis courts or playgrounds very often any more. I have no idea about pickle ball in our area.

Rather obviously, your job at the time must not have been related to customer support. I could see getting chewed out if you were primarily a code developer at the time. My job description was primarily as a system administrator but, the job EXPLICITLY included that I was also Tier III support for U.S. Navy Reserve staff who used the specific mainframe that was my primary duty. Tier III support doesn't get called until the Tier I and Tier II people have reached the end of their expertise. Tier III doesn't stop until the job is done or is determined to be unfixable due to contract, regulation, or law. If it is 5 minutes or 5 days, you fix the problem. The customer is always the highest priority, even in the military. In PARTICULAR in the military, since the customer there is the guy with the gun who is guarding your borders against invasions. You WANT that guy to be happy.

you ever heard of spikeball? saw some college students playing it on campus today? oh wait...is he ignoring me or not? I forget...

playgrounds would be EXACTLY your type of thing, my man. I recommend you get one installed in the backyard of your home (for the grandkids). warning, a funny ahead. ha ha ha. ha ha ha? get it?

no argument here. actually the situation I most remember was during a time doing a contract and I WAS helping a customer who lived at the facility. my boss had screwed up the transfer of files from one hard disk to another, and he got his computer back with all his thunderbird email data rolled into EML files. it happened during the transfer. I remember spending days trying to fix it using a python script that I had gotten from someone on LinkedIn in Russia, only to get chewed out by my boss when he said something to the effect of "well it's Herb's problem. let him deal with it. we could be focusing on other things".

LOL. typical boss for ya!

The youngest grandkid is in Florida. The youngest local grandkid is 14 and not an outdoors/sports type. The other grandkid is 26. NONE of them seem to be getting ready for great-grands, so a playground probably won't be worth it.

I'm going to ignore the rest of that post. It wasn't funny but didn't rise to the level of direct insult.

oh thank Jesus! oh wait...I mean *the good Lord*. skating on thin ice is one of my specialties. that, along with pepperoni pizza slicing.

At last, we found a use for you... except that with my wonky liver, I can't eat pizza too often.
