Hi

Not sure if you guys can help with this one but 6 years ago I used to run an internet marketing company and wrote a database to manage all the info.

I've been out of touch with access since then but recently wanted to get back into it by playing around with the one I wrote, so I searched it out from the deepest darkest folders on my hard drive and double clicked it.......only to find it says the following...

"You do not have the necessary permissions to use the c:\database.mdb object" !!! :(

I have no idea why this might be so since it was only ever used on a simple network with no server involved and I am using it here at home on my standard PC.

Anyone got any ideas, or come across this before?????

All help much appreciated :)

If you had it on another computer, and then you use it on another one, I've had that problem before. What you may be able to do is to go right-click on it, select Properties, then the Security tab and then Advanced and go to the Owner tab and click Edit to try to change the Owner to your current self on your current machine.

I haven't had this problem with Access files, but I did have it with some video files, so maybe it will help.

Hi Bob

Thanks for your help but strangely when I right click on the file I don't have a security tab just a summary tab???? :(

Did you right click on the file, and then select PROPERTIES and THEN the Security tab. Which version of Windows are you running?

Yep, thats exactly what I did but no security tab!!

I'm running XP PRO.

Cheers

:)

Can you post a screen shot of what your stuff looks like when you do it? Also, is this at work or at home?

Hi Bob

Not sure what you mean by stuff. I get the above message when I have double clicked on the file and access has started. It's an access headed message.

I'm using it on my home PC.

Cheers :)

What I meant is can you give a screen shot of the menu that appears when you right click on the mdb file and select properties.

And you are SURE that you have XP PRO (and not XP HOME)? It looks like XP Home as it doesn't give you security tabs for things but PRO does.

Also, did you maybe experiment with Access security?

Hi

Yes, XP PRO (see attached image). I wouldn't know how to experiment with access security?? :(

It maybe related to...

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but you may want to take a look:

Usually when a Windows XP PC is not part of a domain, the Security tab is hidden. To "make visible" the security tab you need to "uncheck" the "Use simple file sharing" setting (Take a look at the attached print screen.). For more info goto:

I hope it helps.

Hi Bob

I've managed to do as you said and now got the security tab but I still cant open the file and I've set every option to every user possible with full control. Unfortunately I cant attach the file as its either too big or the wrong extension or both so if you're willing to give it a shot you can email me at pete@abbbu.biz and I'll reply with the file

Cheers

Mr confused and stumped!! :(

Okay, I've confirmed things. You may not think that you had Access security enabled, but the message you get when trying to open the file is EXACTLY the same message you get if you try to open an Access secured file without joining the workgroup, or using the shortcut which references the workgroup to open it. So, unless you can find that workgroup file, I think you're screwed. Sorry I couldn't give you more positive info.

Hi Bob, thanks for your continued help. I'm not too sure what you mean about finding the workgroup file. What sort of file would this be????

I remember when it was used we were on a network but it was not a server client network, just a user workgroup.

Cheers :)

It doesn't have anything to do with your network workgroup. When you implement Access security it creates an .mdw file which stores information such as usernames and passwords, which objects each user has permission to view or edit, etc. If you lose that file then your database will basically become useless as you need that file to open it.

When you normally do stuff you are joined to System.mdw which is the default workgroup and everyone has access to the file.

Hi Bob

I had no idea!?!?

I searched for an mdw file and found one in the same folder as I got the mdb file from called system.mdw

Not knowing what to do with it I simply placed them both in the same directory and tried double clicking on the mdb file once again (even naming it to its original filename) but I got the same response??? :(

Is there something else I should be doing with it???

Thanks again :)

It's likely system.mdw is NOT the one you want. That is usually the default. But, you can try building a shortcut to open the database using that workgroup file.

Check out this free program
http://www.headwaysystems.com/ShortcutBuilder.htm

It makes it way easy to create your shortcut without having to worry about typing it correctly. It has you navigate to the various parts you need and then it will create the shortcut. Then, you will try to open the database using that shortcut.
