Every time i try to copy and paste text in Microsoft Access 2003 field i keep on getting this message The text is too long to be edited
The text is about 2000 characters long
How do i stop this?

Re: The text is too long to be edited Access 7

The solution of changing the text property from Text to Memo in the underlying source table solves the problem but I have a text area in a Report/Detail section. It does not show an editable field.I cannot yet find a way of converting it to a memo type field. Any help welcome. Thank you:)

What do you mean with "text area", (a label or...)?

Thank you for your interest. In the detail section of a report I am trying to create a printable default document which opens as a background and has fields overlaid to create an individualised report from each records. The print out is a quotation.
I have not been able to create a memo field (I need more than 255 characters) which would hold the default document.
Latest attempts:
I have created a memo field in the underlying data table and have copied the default document content to that. This seems to work OK and gives a print out 3 pages long.
However this means that I have to work out how to copy the content of the memo field to the same field on a new record.
I can't help feeling that I am creating more data (a copy of the document in every record) than is needed which will inevitably reduce efficiency.

I assume the correct solution would be to have a memo field inthe detail section of the Report where the source is within the Report itself. I have not arrived at such a solution. Help is appreciated.

Where do I find the thankyou tick? :banghead:Ok I found it!

Hmm - I maybe wrong, (then show a printscreen of what you've), but I think you're looking how to change a text control.
Change the property "Text Format" from "Plain Text" to "Rich Text".

Thanks, Up to now and because of time difference I have worked out how to copy the content of the memo field to the same field on a new record Thanks here to 599CD Computer Training on YouTube. So it is working although the data is held in every record. I can't help but think this will cause issues later. I will have a go at your suggestion and get back.

Edit:
I created an unbound text field in the Report and changed the Property as suggested/described from Text to Rich Text . Alas it generated the error message "The text is too long to be edited" when attempting to copy the text to it. Thanks for the suggestion.

It shouldn't be unbound, it should be bound to the memo field and input data/text in a report is not the way doing it, for that you use a form.
How much text do you have in that field?

Thanks for your reply. I have described binding it to an underlying data table and the concerns that I have that have lead to my request for guidance. It is about 1100 words long. If it cannot be bound to the Report or some other source that isn't duplicated in the field of a record then how should it be done please? It would be great if you would describe how you would do it. Thanks for staying with this.

I've made a small example with 2 different reports, (use "Print Preview"), if it not what you are looking for, then take a printscreen and try to show what you want.
Sample #1.

Thanks JHB. I have not got a public image /pic area to upload images but what you have provided has sparked me in the right direction I think. Will get back when I have more information.

Hi, I created the table without a key/autonumber as shown and tried to place the text with no success I am afraid. The report was set up as described with a Report Control Source showing the DLookup and the text property was changes to Rich Text.

I completed everything before trying to paste the text into the field of the table.
I can see in the example that there are more than 255 characters so am unclear as to what am doing wrong.

If you can't see it from the sample database, then I think the only way further is that you upload your database with some sample data, (zip it).
Did you remember to set the field type in the newly created table to Memo?

Hi JHB, I have corrected my meagre efforts and your solution is working fine. I also kept the imported text as text (must be unwrapped)rather than rich text. It seemed to layout/flow better.
Thank you for all your efforts.

You're welcome, luck with your project. :)
