I am trying to figure out some productivity stuff and I am stuck. I have developed an application for our security department to keep track of the various tasks they do. One of those things is standing by with combative/violent patients. Sometimes this lasts for fifteen minutes, other times it lasts for hours (or days). While it is easy to track the raw number of stand-bys, what I need to do is trend them during the day.

So, right now I chart the number of stand-bys that start per hour of the day over a period of time (3 from 2a-3a, 4 from 3a-4a, and so on). I need to also be able to count one that starts at 2:30a and lasts until 4:30a as one for each hour - 2a, 3a, and 4a.

Can someone give me a hand figuring out the easiest way to accomplish this? Was I even ably to clearly articulate what I need?
