Hi!

I have worked on plenty of Frontend / Backend systems but I have never come across this problem:

I use Windows Server 2003 for the backend (first time )
The backend is installed as \\10.0.17.251\OAC\gentleBE.mdb (also a first for me)

I can connect my "client" and I do not get any error message. I shut down this machine and go next door where I try to connect the next client. I get the error
"The MS Jet database engine cannot open the file "\10.0.17.251\OAC\gentleBE.mdb". It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data."

I think that it is obvious that its the second part of this statement.

It's not opened exclusively in fact it is not open period.

but what about the permission? Is there a method ? Please answer asap!!

thanks in advance,

Make sure that the permissions for the folder (on the Server) where the Access database lets everyone who is going to use it, have Add/Edit/Delete permissions.

Hey Giz, you don't need to post anything to subscribe to a post. Just, while you have the thread open, go up to near the top and find THREAD TOOLS and the dropdown there will give you SUBSCRIBE as an option.

and do you know how to set these permissions? This is Windows server2003.

This morning I went to the server (Windows 2003 Server) and logged in. The permissions on the server were set to :

Full Control - Administrators
Special - Create Owners
Full Control - M Taitt
Full Control - System
Full Control - Users

The Shareuser tab was set to share the folder. But there was still no joy ....
I can't seem to make this multi use (My own computer worked BTW)

I would suggest some simple tests:

From at least two separate locations where you expect your front end to reside,

Creating a folder on the server
Create a text file in this folder
Add some text to this text file

Delete some text in this text file and save it
Deletethe a text file
Delete the folder you created from the server

I have the problem resolved with a reboot!!
