No one paid the actual max. Don't fool yourself. But the 50s and 60s were the rebuilding of the world after the Germans and Japanese tried to destroy it in the 40s. THAT is why they were such good times and that is when the middle class evolved. Ordinary people could earn good wages to support a family comfortably. Today, most middle class households have two working adults. And the college debt that the young have incurred interferes with their ability to get married and start a family and purchase a house. Not to mention the excessive cost of housing these days. There doesn't seem any longer to be such a thing as a starter home. The 1000 sq ft four room cape only exists in slums now and so no one wants to live in them. Everyone seems to "need" stainless appliances and central air and granite counter tops. Somehow, I grew up OK without them.
