Yes he did. Should he have shut down the government? Probably not. I don't think this was the hill he wanted to die on. To me, it is the POS REPUBLICANS who are working against the Trump agenda and that is why they did so poorly in the special elections. No Republican that I have ever voted for in decades except for Trump has actually done what he promised on the campaign trail. Sadly, the Dems do frequently produce (although never for inner city blacks, there is too much graft available). It is just that I don't want the social "justice" programs and "climate change" programs, etc. They are all just boondoggles that allow people to virtue signal but in reality solve no problem or in the case of social "justice" programs institute a new form of discrimination. I think the dumb kids who voted for this in the past started getting the message. If you are white, and especially male, YOU will be discriminated against in the workplace due to DEI. YOU will be denied scholarships and other free stuff in favor of those who check some boxes.

I remember. The Japanese companies did even better after they started building in the US (as did the American consumers).

The advantage was that the Japanese companies (especially Toyota) had better cars for less money. Critical parts of Japanese-American cars are still made in Japan. The Japanese cars were better because the US had abolished Japan's aviation industry during the occupation, so the best engineers in Japan went into the auto industry while the best engineers in the US went into aerospace.

Which forces the US manufacturers to build bettter.

Yup, they were generally more reliable, and got better fuel economy. The improvements in design, safety, luxury, and performance came from reverse engineering European cars.

I remember Trump campaigning on lower prices, not higher prices. Trump made many contradictory campaign promises, so by fulfilling some, he violated others. Shutting down government DEI is a good idea, but the harm of DEI is small compared to the harm of his trade war on America.

As to the idea that the Republicans are losing elections because they are insufficiently pro-Trump, the polls say otherwise. But I am glad that you are not going to be blaming the upcoming losses in the 2026 elections on illegal aliens voting.

I remember Trump campaigning on lower prices, not higher prices. Trump made many contradictory campaign promises, so by fulfilling some, he violated others. Shutting down government DEI is a good idea, but the harm of DEI is small compared to the harm of his trade war on America.

As to the idea that the Republicans are losing elections because they are insufficiently pro-Trump, the polls say otherwise. But I am glad that you are not going to be blaming the upcoming losses in the 2026 elections on illegal aliens voting.

In all the posts on this thread, I am surprised that no one has mentioned the firings that have firings that have occurred (some high ranking women), the disbanding of EO and the assault on DEI policies and the cutting of federal funding to schools that allow mixed-gender sports.

I thought for sure there would be some wailing and gnashing of teeth, but I see little to no "churn" on these subjects. It could be that they have escaped my notice, but I tend to see these...

It is easier to talk about Trump's economic policies where the effects are objectively measurable and he has delivered the reverse of his promises, high prices instead of low prices, higher government spending rather than lower and stock market crash rather than a boom.

Similarly on the question of trans-gender athletes I don't see that the government has any business in this. How to handle transsexual and intersexual athletes is a difficult question, but it is question to be answered by sports associations and the like, not the government.

From my point of view, there is little difference between MAGA and woke. They both seek to force people to live by their dictates rather than allowing them to make their own choices.

I have no idea if this is effective in the long run - one thing is for sure, it is going to be painful at first.

Most developed countries don't charge high tariffs so we can't coerce them into lowering them.

I agree with that, but would like to supplement your comment. Successful DEI policies by private entities will depend on their ability to find people qualified to do the job asked of them. A non-profit company will care about DEI issues somewhat less than a for-profit company, but when you have a bunch of dead-head employees (in this case, employees in name but who don't do anything useful), it will not be long before budgetary forces limit your ability to keep said employees on-board.

I had a cousin - now long-dead - who was a union worker for the Pullman Corporation - maker of railroad cars. He was a quality-control inspector. Once about every hour, a new rail car would come down the tracks. He would inspect the joints, welds, and seams on the outside and would also examine the inside for hazardous spots. He admitted to me that the cars were coming out with very few flaws, and that he would have to shunt a "bad car" aside maybe every two or three days. Most of the time, he would have half-hour cat-naps between inspections. I loved my cousin for his loving and friendly ways, but his job was NOT highly efficient in terms of using his time. Oh,... he would not have qualified for DEI factors.

It is people like you who are causing the trade war. YOU are giving the Chinese the hope that Trump will cave. Without all the lies in the press, other countries would have come to the table and negotiated fair treaties. You give them hope that Trump will waffle and so they can continue their unequal tariffs with impunity.

Then why do you object to Trump's attempt to get rid of them? I know you don't listen to what Trump says. You rely totally on the left's interpretation of what Trump "meant" by what he said. Trump wants "fair" trade so that would preferably be no tariffs or other barriers including currency manipulation and IP theft and this has been his opinion for 40+ years. He hasn't vacillated and he isn't vacillating now. The interim solution is reciprocal tariffs. He needs something that will bring other countries to the table to negotiate. Trump is gloating about how much money the interim tariffs are generating to convince the other countries that he is perfectly happy with the status quo to encourage them to step up and negotiate. And you believe the ruse.
