ChatGPT: The Future of AI is Here!

Hey @Isaac, I did this just for you. :D

write me a poem about Isaac, Microsoft Access and Christianity

So it executed. But did it actually do anything or store anything?
No, it can't possibly. All Application.GetOpenFileName is allow the user to select a workbook, then store that path in memory. That doesn't even so much as open the workbook.
exceldata being assigned 2 successive different things is very...weird, but I suppose it's not illegal to re-use a variable, if odd.

Assigning exceldata a Range is all it does. Doesn't import anything, much less from the workbook the user selected. All it does is assign exceldata the value of a Range in the host workbook.

But I didn't expect it to just get more and more elaborate by just clicking try again. Kind of weird. Why would it learn from its own trying, with no additional input nor additional resource? That tells me you might as well click the Go button 5 times if it gets more interesting each time - note, i say interesting, because I haven't the time now to study the longer code blocks it generated to see if they are more nonsense or do something, they may.

this morning I showed my wife its ability to write a poem. now that you've waxed so eloquent about me, as if I were a noble inspiration, i hesitate to even tell you what I typed in the box. but i must maintain the brutal self honesty i am known for.

[shamefully continues]

it was the first two words that occurred to me: a**hole (for reasons I CANNOT explain, I swear), and "nicotine", as I use nicotine pouches and was eyeing my can at the time.

sure enough, it typed me a very cool poem using those two concepts.....quite bizarre.

Once there was a Brit named Jon, With a website that was second to none. It was cool and fresh and oh so fun, We all loved to visit and be done.

With a click and a scroll we could explore, The vast expanse of Jon's website galore. From games to news to interesting lore, There was always something new to explore.

But the best part of Jon's site by far, Was the community that had come from near and far. They were friendly and kind, a shining star, In a world of harshness and constant war.

So here's to you, dear Jon, For creating a website that's second to none. We thank you for the hours of fun, And for the memories that will forever be won.

I think you might be reading more into the sequence that it just being a chance thing. In all probability, it could just as well given the best response on the first go, and got progressively worse!

There is something which I am trialing when programming in VSCode called CoPilot. It has been trained on tons of code like github and is a dedicated code autocompletion AI, unlike ChatGPT. You can enter in a comment in your code of what you want and it tries to create it.

Isaac, you are so eloquent! You speak both VBA AND/OR/XOR poetry! (And it was quite good too!)

That's really cool - I like that because it seems like a reasonable balance. between nothing and "write my code for me" - a super super smart auto complete system, as I think Visual Studio is extremely smart but it can always be better.

What code are you having fun learning these days?

I've trained myself on React and JavaScript. It also meant I had to learn about npm, MaterialUI and a bunch of other stuff.

I've actually posted a screenshot of an app I was working on in a thread on this forum:

If it also integrated with IKEA you could end up with a nice new table in your living room!
Yah .. 3d + AI
Pretty soon we'll be to the stage of the Wally movie, all sitting perfectly motionless in reclining chairs sipping sugary drinks.

That's awesome, Jon. Although I'm not currently looking, I do maintain awareness of current job postings pretty well and React is big stuff now.
Good job finding a fun and useful project that keeps the brain and creative juices flowing.

Wish I had a bit more side time. Oh wait, I do and I waste it watching TV. This reminds me now!

I watch far too much Netflix and YouTube. I've cut down massively on watching all the politics. Instead, I am trying to read some books, develop my skills a bit more and so on. I've been reading a book called Digital Minimalism by Carl Newport. It is about cutting back on all this social media and news stuff. He talks a lot about the Amish! So, if my new profile photo has me wearing a hat, you will know why!

When my mom would visit our house she would be a bit out of sorts because we keep a minimalist house hold. No extra nickknacks or whatnots taking up the empty spaces. I guess it can be a little unnerving

My parents live in RURAL Wisconsin, far northern USA, and many of their neighbors are Amish. It's quite fascinating. On the whole, they have proved to be very decent people - definitely qualifying as "good neighbors". There are a few things they do that irk me, such as insist (some of them) on driving their horse-and-buggies on the far edge of the highway, at night, with ZERO lights/reflectors/anything. That's only about the 10%, but let me tell you, the stories of the auto accidents are so hard to read you almost can't eat a meal afterwards.

But, they build houses fast! Many hands make light work. And are surprisingly savvy in business/banking transactions.

To counterbalance my harsh words to the poor chat-bot about the VBA function, here is a better one - I gave it a carefully phrased command and it output what I believe looks accurate enough:

I would have written the 2nd line as Dim result() As String , but maybe it's fine as-is too.

Basically looks correct.

I think more detail and better precision in questions help it to spew out more useful stuff.

Feed it a Newby question from Access World Forums. If it answers correctly, we can have a nice quiet Christmas!

I've already done that. See here:

There was more detail in the AI answer, but I just posted their recommended code snippet. Happy Christmas!

Like I said earlier, its a skill. Learn little bits here and there to improve the probability of getting some good output.
How is good output distinguished from bad?
