You are missing the point of the question. WHY is that clause there? What did it mean to the people who wrote it and voted for it? Clearly, it is unnecessary if all children born here should be considered citizens. The Constitution, including all the amendments is printed in a flyer of 38 pages. It doesn't contain extra, meaningless words. So why do you think those words are necessary?

Because we have ambassadors and such from other countries (think UN diplomatic immunity) who are not subject to US jurisdiction. Their children if born here are not citizens. Immigrants, on the other hand, are subject to us jurisdiction.

Illegal immigrants are subject to immediate deportation. They do not have a right to be in the US. Do not conflate legal vs. illegal
