Drone Hysteria

You're not allowed to fly a drone over residential properties,
In the US you can. You don't own the airspace over your house. There are a ton of regulations as to when and where you can fly, some state, mostly federal. I'm currently in a course to get a commercial drone pilots license.

I think in the UK it is regarded as an invasion of privacy. (I may be wrong)

Col, whether or not it is legally regarded as an invasion of privacy, that is the way people here are treating it. The problem is that such drones represent a hazard in flying over a populated area. If some of these drones are as large as have been described, a falling drone would be heavy enough to kill a person or at the least, cripple their unfortunate target. That is part of the reason why we are not allowed to shoot them down... to avoid collateral damage.

It probably doesn't help that recently, some commercial delivery services have started trial runs of drones as a package delivery device. There is no way to know if a night-time drone is delivering something or spying on something. In either case, I predict that there will eventually be some kind of accident and the clamor will rise for drone restrictions.

I think I'm talking about something different. The drones on sale here you can buy in the electrical shop that sells TV and household goods. They are about 24" across and have a little electric motor and little rotors to make them fly. You operate them with a hand held controller like a PlayStation thing.
I'm guessing you're referring to something bigger, not sure where you can buy those.

So, you think the hysteria is regarding toy drones? Drones the size of buses or SUV's are not toys and probably cost upwards of $50,000 each. They sometimes come in bunches. Near as I can tell, there are no retail outlets which sell these drones.

I didn't know and never heard of a drone that size. In my world, a drone is a toy, can be held with hands and controlled with a joystick or something.
So I searched what a drone is. Most sites I saw said :
A drone is a flying robot that can be remotely controlled or fly autonomously using software-controlled flight plans in its embedded systems.
or
A drone, also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is an aircraft that can fly without a pilot on board. Drones can be controlled remotely by a human or autonomously by an internal or external computer

By these definitions, a F16 fighter is a drone too, because it can fly without a pilot and controlled remotely.

I don't know why, but even if I'm wrong, I tend to believe a drone as a toy. It frightens me to think of a helicopter size drone..

Actually, the people of New Jersey would agree with you completely. If they had a known cause / source of the drones, they could clamor at someone's doorstep to get an explanation. But as it stands, if those drones are not flying pre-authorized flights that are registered somewhere, they represent the unknown and THAT is the real problem.

I always thought that if the super paranoid USA had an unknown object (as Pat said) the size of a bus floating around, surely a couple of jets would scramble to check it out. It can't be that hard to track / follow it to find the source. Seems alot of hysteria over nothing.
Anyway, if it is like a bus there's plenty of room for passengers.
I reckon it's that rich bloke who's name sounds like an aftershave, who's behind it all, if it's true which I doubt, he's one dangerous person who needs watching.
There's no mention of any of this on UK news that I've seen.
Col

Has anyone heard these drones? Most drones are battery operated with a flight time between 30 minutes and 50 minutes. If these were gas powered you would hear them. The one that crashed turned out to be a toy model.

Why would someone with nefarious intent comply with the FAA rules as to lights?

Gotta love the conspiracies. The end of the world is coming.

My drone weighs 249 grams. It costs $1000.00.

An Autel Dragonfish cost $112,000 (about the size of a remote controlled airplane)

Just a few receipts

"The border is secure" - Biden admin.

“When you get vaccinated, you not only protect your own health and that of the family, but you also contribute to the community health by preventing the spread of the virus throughout the community.” - Fauci

"If you like your Doctor you can keep him" - Obama

Anyone figured out who shot JFK yet? Didn't think so......

I guess you haven't seen photos of the reaper drones which are large enough to carry hellfire missiles. These are fixed wing aircraft rather than the helicopter rotor style the public thinks of as drones.

So moke, I guess you never got the memo that UFO's are actually real. That report has been out for a few years now.

If drones are able to carry stuff, it should be easy to carry drugs from Mexico into the USA. Does that happen?

While I wouldn't doubt it for a moment, Col, I do not recall seeing any articles talking about that. It is a legitimate question.

Perhaps we don't see much because the Biden administration is so soft on so many illegal actions that to them it is a non-issue. But that would be a mere conjecture on my part.

Drone is a catch-all generic term for UAV's. The MQ-9 is a UAV while the smaller drones are classified as sUAV's.

I'm sure it does. There were recent arrests of people using drones to drop drugs and cellphones into the prison yards

We don't have 'yards' in the UK, we have gardens.
My neighbour has a drone, it's like a baby helicopter with 3 rotors. You can buy them in most electrical shops, but I understand you are limited to where you can fly it.
Col

Sure, but if they are large and could injure someone upon falling, and if there wasn't much of a limit to where people could fly them, I'm sure you'd also be concerned. The weird thing is our government not telling us much of anything, and why in the world can't someone just capture one of them already??

Drones to carry the drugs over the wall are far cheaper than tunnelling under it. The government could make the area up to a half mile north of the border a no fly zone and shoot down drones. We can distinguish drones from actual aircraft that might be carrying people. At least make the cartels go to the expense of digging tunnels;)
