Hello

I get the above error when I try to insert text data into my Access 'password' column.

Does the error mean that the field is too small to accommodate the data I am trying to insert into it? In Design View, it says 'Field Size: 50'. I am not sure what 50 is? 50 characters?

Can I make that field size whatever size I wish?

50 means 50 characters - you can have any size you want from 1 to 255 characters, after that you need to move to a memo field.

A 50+ password is pretty ambitious.....

How are you inserting the text?, unless you are typing it in, the problem is probably with your code

It's a password that has been salted and hashed (encrypted) so instead of the code inserting something like John Brown (username) password123 (password), 'password' would be rendered in the Access password column as something like: d5ec75d5fe70d428685510fae36492d9

The error implies an arithmetic issue so that suggests to me that the problem is in your HashPassword function or you are not assigning a value to password.Text resulting in an error

Thanks for your reply.

I have now set the character length in Access (password column) to 255 and the error message has changed. It is now:

System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format.

It refers to this particular line:

binarySaltValue(0) = Byte.Parse(saltValue.Substring(0, 2), System.Globalization.NumberStyles.HexNumber, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture.NumberFormat)

This happens whether or not I type in 666666 for the password or Jimmy1 as the password. The database column, 'password' (if that is where the fault lies), is a text data file.

to me, there is something not quite right with your password manipulation.

Byte.Parse, as you have configured it, is expecting a number encoded into a string formatted as Hexadecimal. For example "&H2FA4"

Byte.Parse is not suitable for your purpose unless you are only going to allow numeric passwords (and change the expected number format).
