Gun laws do they work

You could legislate against this kind of thing, a 9 year old with a weapon she cant control. Absolutely ridiculous.

There are actually VERY strict laws regarding non-security/police/military people and fully-automatic weapons. I don't know the laws in AZ (although they're likely more lax than in other states), but it's quite possible that giving an automatic weapon to a 9 year-old to fire was already illegal. If that was indeed the case, making it MORE illegal doesn't really help.

And for the record, teaching a 9 year old to shoot isn't, in itself, a bad thing. If there are guns in the house, making sure the children are familiar with them and how NOT to use them really does help cut down accidents. (In my case, not only did I know how to use each of the dozen or so guns in my house, but I was fully aware that if I touched them without DAMNED good reason, I would deeply regret it when my father found out.)

Was entirely legal apparently. Why is such a thing legal - presumably cos gun nuts want it to be?

I agree with Frothingslosh, if you allow guns to be legal in a society it makes sense to ensure all citizens are trained in their use and 9 seems a reasonable age to start. What this incident shows is that the availability of high powered automatic weapons is the problem, a point that has been made over and over on this thread, the gun nuts just don't get it, to them everything is black and white
Gun control equals banning all guns.

Fanatics of any stripe, Brian. They're always like that.

I have been fooling with guns since I was in grade school and believe me that was a while ago. What idiot would give a child a USI automatic. They are not ready and not strong enough to hold the weapon in automatic mode. Human error and fortunately it was not the kid this time that took the bad results.

Unfortunately, the little girl will live with it all the rest of her life and it was not her fault.

The fellow that died was an instructor. HE should have know that a Usi 9mm when in full automatic mode will hit anything but what you want it to. In a room with four walls, it wants to rise toward the ceiling. To let a 9 year old shoot it with it is in full automatic mode was a deadly error.

I guess that is what they did over there, only ban high powered guns, not all of them. Automatics are regulated and registered. Again just a bad idea went wrong'

For anyone without brain damage concerning gun issues (i.e. most people outside of the US) this is just a case of poetic justice.

Wrong this is a tragic accident, Justice has nothing to do with it.

A tragic accident that will scar the girl for a very long time. That idiot should have known better. But yes, certainly not justice. He didn't deserve death for making a stupid mistake.

Pretty country up there and pretty girls too? was there a long time ago and your country was very very liberal then. But case in point when the Muslims come knocking
and they will, Just rem I am too far away to help you and a ball bat won't do.

Ok, I think that both sides of the fence can see from that video, that the set-up was completely unsafe.

How about a compromise? Maybe that all novices need to be lying down to shoot?

And should not be firing high powered weapons until strong enough to cope with the recoil.

Brian

You guys really take the biscuit, and, unwittingly, underscore the very point I was making. Thanks.

If people are wanting their kicks I would fully recommend the Ulster Grand Prix

http://www.ulstergrandprix.net/media/videos/

It has everything -
The amazing spectacle of bikes racing at over one hundred miles and hour.
Individuals showing courage and skill
Danger but mainly to the competitors - spectators occasionally get injured

Ironically road racing is considered too dangerous for the United States.

Both in this race and several other races throughout the UK if there is a crash even with a death. There is a solemn period of contemplation and silence where they clear the track and then everyone gets right back on their bikes.

Really gets you focused on how lucky we are to be alive.

Agree with you which is why the military teaches a fresh recruit to fire a rifle while laying down in the prone position. However, THis girl was just too young to control any automatic weapon.
