Horse or cow?

Yes, we have a paki newsagent across the road from us. He's very nice,

Would you call someone from Pakistan a "Paki"?

No - never have

Uh?

You better tell us how you use it? Is this not offensive either?

No doubt you're going to tell me:rolleyes:

I'll take that as a no then.

Here Col open wide and swallow...

From dictionary.com

Chink ( P ) Pronunciation Key (chngk)
n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for person of Chinese birth or descent.

How did this start??? It was Rich saying his local Chinkie used cats when the chicken was finished wasn't it?

Col

Yep. Look Col. It's really simple to understand my point of view. These slangs were originally coined by racist bigots. You may not share the same point of view as these racist bigots but you're using their terminology. They contain the same meaning whether you or the majority of the UK are aware if it or not.

"Chink" is classed as "Offensive slang". It's in the dictionary. Why use an obvious derivative of it?

Black's here call each other "******" all the time, we even see it on TV. But god forbide a white person do that. Double standard, but it is what it is.

It's an intentional double-standard. By using the term they have stripped it's ownership from white racist bigots and throw it back in their faces everyday.

Unfortunately this convinces the unwary that its acceptable slang.

Personally I'd rather the term was never used at all.

dan-cat, if we all joined each other in ignore-Rich land I think we'd be better off.

FoFa, I agree completely. I might add that anyone who uses the term in front of black people (unless -maybe- you're also black) is guaranteed to offend if not outright get their ass kicked or killed.

Colin, to clarify my original point: I was not suggesting Rich's usage of the word "chinkie" was intended to be offensive or that his usage even was, for certain, offensive. All I suggested is that some people on these forums will consider it a racial slur and find it offensive (as Lisa obviously did). Therefore, anyone who cares even a tiny bit about not offending other members would avoid intentionally using such words.

This, I am quite sure will fall on deaf ears...

I'd also like to add that I completely agree with you about the US's screwed up views on sexuality. We're actualy quite idiotic about it.

How so?

Pity you didn't take your own advice and stop trying to stir the shit in the first place then

Originally it is a label to elevate oneself above an ethnic minority.

Chinese, ethnic minority, am I missing something here, it's the biggest populated country in the world

Would it be too much to ask you to clean your language up a bit?

The label is used in the UK in which Chinese people are an ethnic minority.

Is that all you could come up with?

How do you know they find it offensive ?

I didn't set the criteria for dragging the language down to gutter level

But you certainly seem to be willing to sustain it...

are you saying I've got to have the last word, I always thought that was a female trait, oops silly me, it's offensive to differentiate between the sexes as well now in front of the PCs

I've always understood the word Chink to be a derogatory term, akin to "******". People in my area don't refer to Chinese people or Chinese meals or restaurants in that fashion unless they WANT to be a racist bigot. Unfortunately, we do have a few of those around.

I don't particularly understand the reasoning behind the whole James Bond film uproar. First of all, didn't we have the film '28 Days Later' that had male nudity in it? Unless it was the amount of nudity i.e. a few seconds worth like 28 Days or a few minutes worth perhaps??? Second of all, why is male nudity considered to be more 'offensive' than female nudity?

I'll take that as a no in answer to my original question.

In answer to your next question:

I don't know that all do. I'd rather not take the risk considering the dictionary defines "chink" as an offensive term. You've added two letters to the end and ... voila! ... an amicable term for all to use.

Common sense Rich... just a bit of common sense.

Polite 101 for Ricki's sake; The female remark is fine, but if you'd used a derogatory word like the 'c' word instead of 'female', then that would have been rude. Same with the other words being tossed around here...

IMHO :o

Get it?

LMAO. I didn't start it Mr Higg. He did!

Now I'll take that as a good supporting argument for Kraj's assertion that our values regarding sexuality are a bit wacky...
