In Australia people that are perhaps age 40 or so and under now use a lot of American terms, undoubtedly due to TV and internet.

So we have

Hi Guys, Hi Mike, You guys, ass instead of arse etc. Also spelling such as color and favor etc.

Does the same thing happen in the UK?

And then there is that lower case code type of writing as in.....b4, u etc

I haven't noticed any UK people spell things the american way to be honest,

I think in the UK it's different, most people have the attitude that the language is English it originated in England so therefore any American spelling or word substitution is simply incorrect.

Having said that I have noticed a large amount of people especially younger people using "text speak"...like:

Code:
Hello m8, wot u up 2 l8ter

Which I hate, it just makes you sound stupid

Yes, that sounds reasonable.

Could it also be TV. In Australia TV is almost totally dominated by American shows.

With you on that one.

My wife's friend teaches geography and had an entire essay handed in written in that cr*p. The boy who wrote it was adamant it should have been accepted as valid and amazed when told he had to rewrite it.

Certainly not. I've never noticed any of that incorrect spelling except in 'text speak'. It's disgusting and should be banned.

There is only one way to correctly spell an English word. The English way.

Text speak is a corruption of spelling. It is therefore incorrect.

It "may" be used I suppose as a form of shorthand for notetaking and the like but in any form of document is it entirely wrong.

That's the way I see things.... but I am British :D:D:D

Thanks Len, well said and totally accurate.

For that, we have Pitman Shorthand, which is a skill in itself. Misspelling and txt-spk is not and never will be. Woe betide any of my staff who use any such method of communication with my customers!

Whilst I sympathise with the truly dyslexic, I also think that it is excessively diagnosed as an ailment, in part to make up for the laziness of the allegedly sufferer and the inadequacies and emasculation of our current eduction standards.

I post this as a passionate protagonist of proper English.

*consults dictionary to decipher this post* ;) :p

I do agree that Pitman Shorthand is the accepted standard but perhaps my grudging partial acceptance of text speak is because of the inability of mobile phone manufactureres to develop a full qwerty keyboard on their equipment that is user friendly and not larger than existing mobile phones. Maybe speach recognition software should be built in. :)

Come to that if you have a mobile phone why text anyway as either the person answers or you can leave a message.

True dyslexia is a known condition. Fortunately there are now more accurate tests available to properly diagnose the condition.

Spelling laziness is more a condition brought about by our current appalling education system than any medical condition.

Any spelling mistakes in my posts are the result of a failing interfaces between brain, eyes and fingers due to years of use.

Funnily enough I think exactly the same thing about you.

I'll ask again.
Why do you think I should be banned?

Been there, tried it, didn't work. :D
Colin is a fact of life, much like war, pestilence, flood, famine, hurricanes, tornados, etc. Each is a natural disaster which cannot be avoided by innocent people. So, you just have to try to go on with life and hope you don't get hit by any of them.

Is war a natural disaster? Discuss please.

*Grabs his neighbors Bible (I don't own one)*

Of course it is, war, at least American war, is condoned by God (The one true American God *all others are phonies and posers*) and the Lord Savior Jesus Christ, Amen. It's just like lightening, God's up on Olympus drunk off his rocker tossing bolts at us. Hurricanes too, God let that Kraken guy out of his cage and because some idiot forgot to chain a chick to a rock he starts running amock and making storms.

Geez don't you goto Sunday school ?

Col

Shouldn't be banned, he's just the typical forum troll. Go to any forum and somebody will fill in that spot to try and get everyone worked up over nothing. It always gives the forum some flavor, but if it really bothers you you just have to ignore it. Not that difficult, most of the time if I see his name I just quickly ignore whatever was said unless everybody is really getting worked up, which is always entertaining to me.

It's really an art form, trolling. I think it's a lot easier for him on this forum since lots of the same people seem to take offense at the smallest things he says which are obviously made to make certain people's blood boil, but then again it is an older crowd and really he isn't all that bad compared to some much more vulgar trollers. He typically has a logical argument, it's just usually in-your-face and absurd.

Anyways, just wanted to post that because I don't understand how a lot of the same people continue to add the wood to his fire. By all means, Col, keep it up, it makes for some laughs.
