Should the civilian population of all countries be disarmed?

But the odds of happening to you Bri are what, Millions to one against? and of course you do have the legal right to defend your home and property, even with a baseball bat which you just happen to store beside the front door;)

Not sure that we have any rights these days, they all seem to be on the side of the criminal since New Labour introdiced the lawyers' money spinner called the Human Rights Act.

Do criminals have rights ? Yes thay have the right to a fair trial and should not be victims of mob law. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Yes like the News of the World campaign against paedophiles ;)

I agree it appears that way but I think only the stupid cases make the headlines;)

Any british government would have had to have introduced that legislation because it is part of EU law.

And now we'll be joining the Euro because Brown has demolished the value of the Pound:mad:

Tell me what you want me to say then.

How about "I'm very sorry and it will never happen again". :D

Seriously, in Canada we have reasonably liberal laws for shotgun and rifle ownership. You are required to obtain a Firearms Acquisition Certificate issued by your local police before you can purchase a shotgun or rifle.
Permits for handguns are extremely hard to get. The reason being is that most Canadians realize the primary purpose of a pistol is to KILL PEOPLE.
Getting a carry permit for a handgun (having it on your person on the street) is legally possible but the police will put so many roadblocks in the way you may as well forget about it.
The penalty for being in possession of a rifle or shotgun with a sawn off barrel is life imprisonment.

Would you really be able to live with the fact that you say shot and killed a 12yr old breaking into your home? The reality is that if we were all armed then so would those who break in, not a very pleasant thought surely?

Yes, I could. Unless the child was doing it out of necessity (food, shelter), which in America is pretty silly. But even under that circumstance . . . just knock for help.

In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania you do not have the right to defend yourself in your own home in some cases. When I was a child, our home was burglarized while we were away. My father later related that the police had told him to buy a shotgun and if anyone was ever caught inside the house and was shot he would have to go outside and break a window.

Basically the idea is you cannot just shoot random people who "wander" into your house. But if you heard glass break you could then justify fearing for the life of your family members and open up.

On a lighter note, when I was working on my Criminal Justice degree I asked one professor, who was a former chief of police, why I couldn't fill my yard with landmines and sentry guns. Apparently laws exist that define those as death traps - there goes my dreams of having my own cult complex, bummer eh? But that laws exist to cover such absurdity is hilariously amazing to me.

Indeed, I hear that in the US there are many vacant houses and factories that have been reposessed by banks where homeless kids could break into and live.
Or they could go to California and live in the shell of a burnt out film star's house and shelter there, plus (an added bonus) with the bush fires there, they'd keep warm too.

Nonesense. Pistols don't kill people, people do. The primary purpose of my 22 pistol (loaded with ratshot), is to kill snakes.

. Pistols don't kill people, people do. .
Nonsense, people armed with pistols kill, and in actual fact there are reports of people being killed by simply dropping an armed pistol, therefore the original poster was correct:cool:

It still needed a person to arm it then drop it. But please note that I don't think people should be allowed to carry pistols or any other weapon, and never cease to be amazed that they are allowed to carry them concealed, what's that all about?

Nonesense, people can kill with a baseball bat or a car. I've never heard of a report where a pistol was laying around thinking, damn you, boom, you're dead. Therefore the original poster was incorrect.
