I can tell you that our place is about the only one in the immediate area that has not been broken into BUT it is very obvious that the house is heavily armed. I must admit that at different times of a night when I hear a noise I have been disappointed that it is not an intruder.

Amen to that, it's pretty bad when you get used to counting the footsteps on the floors above so you know where to aim based on floorboard creeks.

I saw someone mention that people have died from dropping weapons. I chuckled. If a construction worker drops a wrench or hammer, or other tool, off a skyscraper and it kills someone below should we ban those tools? What about someone who slips on a rock hiking? Are slippery rocks or boots now illegal? Should to government inspect you every time you are going to go hiking to make sure you are wearing proper safety equipment?

I also saw the bat argument. A person defending themself should not be required to stop and assess a situation in which they are in immediate danger or in a situation where they perceive themselves to be in immediate danger. If they are capable of stopping and saying "Well, I can see the burglar, he's smaller than me and I don't see any weapons, he isn't going for my kids rooms yet, if I wait a few more minutes I might be able to get by him and grab that bat." Then good on them, they didn't have to take a life. Maybe their are some who could do that, but I'm pretty sure my fiance would freak out were she in that situation, I'd prefer to know she could just grab the shotgun and "point and click" without fear of repurcussions because "criminals have rights".

While I'm not a big fan of the American concept of a gun in every home, until they wake up and get rid of them totally, there are a necessity in some areas of the US.
