Thanks all, for your feedback. The real root of my problem was that Windows 10 themes no longer update the System Application colors, although they still exist. As @petertheme kindly shared, his plugins for using the Access Themes would be one workaround for this. However, I don't want my users to have that much control over appearance (I'm not currently set up to handle the potential for font changes, etc. on multiple screen dimensions & other variables I can't yet predict.). To get back on track, I used my previous code and updated it to reference a color table that I built with three themes - happily mild grey, obnoxiously bright white, and way too dark black.
Unfortunately, I also learned way too much about Windows 10 themes while trying to get mine back to a happily mild grey one. I've also learned how to back them up, though Microsoft has made even that difficult.
