Good day all.

Here is a bit on an interesting one. I am currently designing a database and I would like to connect it to an apparantly existing bit of kit available in the uk that connects a pc serial port and the users telephone line. When someone calls, it will send the telephone number of the caller (if available) through to the pc. The database can then use this telephone number to retrieve the callers details, if they are held. Does anyone happen to know what these devices are called? I have looked on google for Caller Line Identifier Hardware etc but no joy. Thanks.

Gareth

Try searching for "caller ID" or "PC Caller ID"

Yes I tried these also. No joy. :-( thank you though...

Instead of using a seperate piece of equipment and connect throught the serial port you can use certain 56K modems and plug the phone line straight into it.

Activex controls for Access are available for this setup.

yes..thats a good idea. The only problem I face with this is that the call would need to take place through the computer which could pose some issues. I will look into this though. Thanks for you help Zigzag.

The call does not have to be answered by the PC.
The PC just picks up the ID number while the incoming call is ringing.
The call can still be answered normaly.

Oh right ok. ActiveX will take care of the database management so that it can retrieve customers records base on the caller id string?

Thanks

Gareth

It's known as Computer Telephony Integration or CTI. Try searching on that.

Did you manage to get your database to recognise the UK caller info.

If so how did you go about it.

I have a database that I wish to be able to recognise the UK caller info from my modem, which I know excepts UK called ID info.

Then store the Date, Time, and Number of the call

Thanks Nigel Cross
