It's not that we didn't know it happens. It's the new (~ past 5 years) way of accepting/encouraging/embracing/funding it.
I've posted links to detailed articles on the subject, so it is pretty clear that gays and folks at the extreme trans situation are born that way, far greater than a 50/50 bet. Maybe 80/20 or 90/10 that this is a physiological issue. In fact, Isaac, you were a person to whom I directly responded regarding such issues and a discussion of "conversion therapy."
Calling it the "new way of accepting it" is perhaps the wrong way to phrase it. It is the gay & trans new way of NOT accepting continuation of the status quo. When the African heritage folks got tired of 2nd-class citizenship, they (correctly) started protesting and putting themselves out for all to see in public places. They defied the "separate but equal" baloney and sought full social integration - which to some degree actually happened, though there is still progress to be made. The LGBTQA+ group is tired of being 2nd-class citizens as well. And do you blame them?
