US TV decency

Is such a reaction over a common phrase commonplace?

Not really, but that isn't a common phrase over here which is probably why it's raising such a fuss. I guess that people haven't figured out yet that the more coverage they give something the more attention it gets. If no one had mentioned anything about the comment it would have slipped off into oblivion by now.

No need to tell me, I'm not usually the one who hijacks. ;)
and who said you did??? I was merely pointing out yet another example (to add to Rich's) of a sensible discussion.

So far. ;) :D

Given some time, I'm sure it will degenerate. I hope I'm proven wrong. :D

Whats the US show with Ian McShane (Lovejoy to me) that has the word cocksucker every few minutes?

'Deadwood'

It's currently being shown on the History channel, over here (complete with a misspelled warning about the swearing, violence, etc. at the end of each commercial break).

a change of direction is not necessarily a degeneration.:D anyway, its you that keeps trying to deviate this thread at the moment:rolleyes:

Talking of deviation which we wern't I would have thought that since Helen Mirren had been depicting the Queen some alternative description more aligned to her station in life would have been more appropriate

Base over Apex (For engineers)
Orb over Crown ?
Spurs over Coronet
Earl over Baron
Bush over Blair (sorry ...the brain just went)

Any others ?

easy over eggs or something?

Col

"a$$ over tin-cup"

...but I don't think the censors would like that one either:rolleyes:

I've always been partial to "Ass over teakettle". ;)

Me, I think the uproar about using the word "tit" is udderly ridiculous. But yes, a significant portion of the American population is (or do I mean are?) puritanical. Are little kids who could be traumatized  by mention of the word actually interested in watching the Emmys? I don't think so. But parent groups like this will milk the controversy for all it's worth. I try to keep abreast of current events, but when I hear this sort of thing I despair.

Anyway, here's another example of this kind of thinking:

Just as well you said 'breast' rather than 'tit' or this site would have erupted.

I agree. Like I said earlier, if that phrase were more common over here, it wouldn't be getting near this amount of attention.

She was clearly talking about a relative of the donkey, and a species of bird...

"I nearly went donkey over bird"
:p

oh, and you Brits can't complain too loudly... remember Australian Tourism's "Where the bloody hell are you?" ads

I have no idea what list of words censors use these days to deem anything "inappropriate"

I think "tit" was on George Carlin's list of 7 dirty words though.... lol... maybe that's what they're still using.

Don't click the link if you're "language sensitive"
