as to your question how much goes to health care - its quite hard to come to a eaxct figure but the tax bill works out at roughly 7% of the gross national income

Person tax 20% on the first 30-35k (?) and then ries there after to 35% on the next £100k or so and then a top tax of 45% on 150k+(although you don't pay the extra 11% on anything above £100K)
national' insurnace (State Pension) 11%

roughly we take home 66% of your pay
then there is a council tax of £1,000 to £1,500 per year

which isn't far off state side when you come down to it

Would Jesus turn a "bum" away Ken? Is it our call to decide who should live and who should die simply because we don't hold the same beliefs (ie some people believe they are incapable of success therefore don't try to get a job, mostly that stems from a bad childhood). ? If everyone is equal in the eyes of God, why not in the eyes of Christians and/or the NHS?

Christians think nothing of anyone except themselves, they are hypocritical, arrogant, self centred and hate anyone who does not believe in their fairy tale. That's why I gave up going to church.
Apart from that, the vicar said my Mother would go to hell because she believed in God but didn't go to church yet she read the bible every night. After he said that, I went home, burnt my bible and religious books, and never went there again and I despise anything to do with religion. My mother was worth 100 so called christians.

50% of bankruptcies ( Himmelstein, D, E. Warren, D. Thorne, and S. Woolhander, "Illness and Injury as Contributors to Bankruptcy") in the USA are in bankruptcy because of medical expenses that exceeded their health insurance coverage. What a great system the USA has, work hard, pay for you insurance and you can still end up bankrupt because you got ill.

The teachings of Jesus in the gospels are very clear about this, Ken. Although on a strict reading you could skip giving them the shower but there is a clear-cut injunction to feed the hungry. In fact there is a strong socialist thread in many of Jesus's teachings. Must make it awkward for right-wing Christians but I guess they just use the bible like an A la carte menu - pick out the bits they like and ignore the rest

Part of my wages also go towards social security which help to provide the unemployed and disabled with food and housing. Now we have that out of the way why is the next step inviting people into my house for food and a shower?

Nearly all european countries do have a tax funded welfare system to provide for these basic needs . We call it civilisation.

Sorry but inviting someone into your house for a meal and a wash is not a metaphor for providing basic needs.

Also I pointed out that my taxes do help provide housing and food for the unemployed and disabled.
