Sorry to mess up your argument, but I am really not in sales. Although, should someone in this discussion convince me that god really does exist, I will get into sales immediately to take advantage of the prosperity that my new found faith would surely visit on me.

You are in sales. You may not recognise that fact, you might be no good at sales but you are in sales. About the only person that would not be in sales would be someone with zero ambition.

One of the best salesman in a long time was a bloke called Jesus and his 12 sales reps were pretty good. The story is still holding.

Wow, this is getting way way OT but I can't resist. Please explain to me how I am in sales: I sit at my desk and I write code. Then I fix some bugs. Then I add some features that ofcourse nobody thought to ask for until the program was already distributed. Then I fix some more bugs. Then I argue with people I don't know on the access world forums. Then I fix some more bugs. Then I write some more code. Eventually I go home and eat dinner. Which part of that is sales?
Or would you put me in the the category of people with zero ambition?

You said you write code. Do you work for the gov't or private company? If for a private company what is the coding about. Why does it have to be done?

Yes, it makes you wonder even more when you consider the fact that the white house was briefed on the impending attack before it happened, and did nothing to stop it from happening. And the fact that after the attacks, every plane, commercial and private, was grounded, except for the plane that flew members of Osama bin Laden's family out of the U.S. And the fact 7 years later, Osama bin Laden still has not been captured or prosecuted.

To answer in order, yes, far too many to list here.

I disagree. I am good at what I do, otherwise they wouldn't pay me to do it. I enjoy sitting in front of my computer all day. I enjoy writing code. I do not enjoy convincing people to buy things (I have worked in sales before).

Private company. Obviously, someone is buying the products I create. That is where the money for my salary comes from. BUT, just as I depend on the salespeople to sell the products, the salespeople depend on me to create the products. I don't see how you can put one above the other - you can't HAVE one without the other.

Maybe. But I think it would be more accurate to say that this has been a slow week for bugs, and this thread is far more entertaining than watching CNN bash Obama.

That is pretty harsh. I don't think that was warranted at all.

But you obviously enjoy trying to convince people that atheism is the way to go. Sales is not necessarily about selling products. By the way, good salesmen or saleswomen don't don't convince people to buy a product. They strongly establish a need.......

It is not about putting one above the other. What it is about is all big things happen only when a sale is made. The person who can do your coding but who is also into sales and following a concept is the person that owns a business.

Mike, point taken. However, I am still having a hard time justifying converting to christianity just so I can be good at sales and make a lot of money. Isn't greed one of the deadly sins?

Brian,

There are two parts to her job. One is the mechanics of the teaching. The other is to do it ina way where the kids will go with it and also the employer is all happy. If she was doing it as a self employed then she would need customers.

If in doubt, then tell her to tell the boss to go to hell and the same to the parents of the kids. That is the opposite to sales.

I did not suggest you convert to Christianity or any other form of supernatural.

And being rich might not be about money, could be being in postition where your ideas carry some big weight.

But converting in of itself is not the key. The key is about going with concepts without needing everything to be proven before moving ahead.

Ah, but that is what I asked. If we put aside the question of whether the supernatural exists or not, what tangible benefits do people obtain from their belief in the supernatural?

My ideas do carry some big weight. I am the one who designs the products. I am the one who builds them.

As to not needing everything to be proven before moving ahead, that one made me laugh out loud. You are clearly not a developer, because if you were, you would know that nothing, absolutely nothing, is known or proven or defined until AFTER the product has already been built and distributed.

In that case, yes.

I have a policy holder who is a lawn mowing/handyman etc and is a very big money earner. On the surface his occution is lawns/handyman. His true occupation is a salesman. The reason he makes so much money is that he is an extremely good door knocker both in actual ability plus great consistency. Result, he generates a huge amount of work and of course then earns money of the labour of others. He is the first to tell you that 70% of his blokes are quicker on the lawns and better at the handyman stuff than he is. But he makes the big money not them.
