Expel Wayward Republicans from the Senate? (1 Viewer)

President Trump is illegally imposing your preference for US-made goods on everyone with punitive taxes.
No, he's not. He is letting you decide, just as I do. And what part of RECIPRICAL do you not understand? do you have any f*****g clue what the actual tariffs Canada applies to things like our chicken and turkeys actually are? Please tell us whether or not you think they are "fair". They have been in place for years SPECIFICIALLY to prevent Canadians from purchasing poultry from the US.

PS. Absolutely NOTHING we say here will have any impact on what Trump does or does not do regarding foreign policy. So, let me suggest that you log your opinions and we will revive the thread in two years to see who was correct.

The anti-tariff crowd always cites higher consumer prices as a reason to oppose tariffs. But what about laid-off steel and automotive workers? Those folks were productive members of society and are now relying on government assistance. And who pays for that assistance? Oh yeah the taxpayer. ;)

What about the workers in other industries? If consumers pay more for cars, they have less money to buy everything else. Higher prices for cars also mean that fewer cars will be bought, resulting in fewer auto workers.

A tariff is a form of indirect government assistance, being paid for with higher prices for the consumer.

Pat, I remember that you said that Trump was joking about suspending the constitution. That seems to have the serious part, the joke was when talked about the lower prices.

If enough people contact their congressmen about Trump's illegal tariffs, that will influence their votes.

It seems that you do not understand the free market system. There will always be "winners" and "losers" in response to changing economic dynamics. Consequently, your statement is pointless.

How is a tariff "a form of indirect government assistance"? See your prior statement that you made below. Why would a country impose something that would hurt them. How do you reconcile that with "indirect government assistance" since you say that the consumer is hurt by tariffs. As usual you display total ignorance concerning economics.
Tariffs hurt the country that imposes them.

Do You? Did you notice the has to reach a certain quota part? Or the exemption for usmca signatories?

Explain why is Canada and Mexico doing the same thing? Obviously they are way smarter than Trump, so why would they hurt themselves?
Because trump broke the usmca that he negotiated.

Because trump broke the usmca that he negotiated.

Or because there's been a 50 year tariff on American dairy? Around 270 -300%

Remember, tariffs are always bad for the consumer, regardless of the reasons. That's the liberal mantra. If Trump does it, it's bad; if other countries do it, well, not so bad.

Go read the language. The tariff didn't kick in until a certain amount was imported. We have never reached that limit. Trump was the one who negotiated it. Just him lying again.

"While Canada has never outright blocked U.S. dairy through tariffs, its quota system effectively limits imports, and when quotas are exceeded, the high tariffs act as a deterrent. This means U.S. exporters rarely ship enough dairy to trigger the extreme tariff rates."

Here's a better explanation > Dairy and poultry supply management in Canada

Why do you have a problem with auto workers losing their jobs to foreign competition? As you said, "There will always be "winners" and "losers" in response to changing economic dynamics".

Countries usually impose tariffs to benefit a specific group at the expense of country overall. It is an anti-free market practice.

Again you are very disingenuous with your response. You attempted to imply something that was never stated.
That was a very unscrupulous response.

It was AccessBlaster who was concerned about workers losing their jobs. You stated "1) Many countries impose onerous tariffs on US products. That is not fair. Trump is attempting to level the playing field with faux "free trade". 2) Trump is trying to bring manufacturing back into the US by making foreign products more expensive. That will encourage US investors to build factories here and/or foreign investors to build factories in the US."

Why should the government favor domestic manufacturing over other kinds of economic activity? And why is being "fair" more important than our standard of living? And Trump's tariff threats have been directed against countries that do not impose onerous tariffs.

... And Trump's tariff threats have been directed against countries that do not impose onerous tariffs.
Other countries impose limits, quotas, VAT, or outright tariffs, just like the USA. It's called protectionism. Every country has an interest in protecting its own market let's just be honest.

A VAT is an internal tax for revenue. Protectionism means lowering standard of living for everyone to benefit a few. Most governments have learned that lesson.

VAT can also serve as a trade policy tool when applied to imports. Whether "most governments have learned that lesson" is subjective.

The supply mgmt. in Canada is done both domestically as well as internationally. It's how they keep their dairy farmers in business. We do it by setting a minimum price for milk.

Now trump decided to increase steel and aluminum to 50%.
